When a beatboxer adds a twist with a Thaipusam beat on stage and the the multiracial audience chants "Veil! Veil!" along, you know the holiday vibe was being felt by everyone at the TRAXXFM Upstage Battle of the Bands - The Road To VIMA competition a day ahead of the significant Malaysian festival. The event which is in its third installment and in collaboration with VIMA this year, saw a capacity turnout of fans at The Venue in Pavilion KL to catch nine independent acts battling it out for a spot to perform at the highly respected Voize Independent Music Award (VIMA) Gala Night, which will be held at The View in G-Tower on 24th February 2013. The growing independent artistes platform also saw a rise in Tamil language acts taking advantage of the opportunity to present themselves across board.
Although only four slots were initially offered, VIMA founders Siva Chandran & Meera Thuraivel from Saintz & Sinnerz added a fifth, due to the quality of acts that showcased their talents at Upstage yesterday evening. The top spot went to award winning singer songwriter Amirah Ali (who is also nominated for seven awards at VIMA 2013), followed by Tamil hip hop crew Illaiya Hustlaz, rock hoppers Kamaswagger and Tamil rappers D4. The additional slot went to acoustic singer songwriter Melinda Wong. The winners were selected by a panel of judges made up of seasoned musician Russel Curtis, experienced producer-composer D'Navigator from Starr Sound & RTM Music Services Department's session head Eddie Kismilardy Kamas Masud, with 20% of the votes coming from the attending audience.
Event emcee, TRAXXFM deejay & TV host Alvin Sinclair kept a tight rein on the proceedings while TRAXXFM's Yogee The Legend kept the crowd in stitches throughout the entire session which ran close to clockwork thanks to the diligent and efficient TRAXXFM crew. Main winner Amirah Ali suffered some minor setback during her set when the sound system took a turn for the worse, but kept her composure and beaming smile, and pulled through like a champion, after the set was stopped to fix the problem (almost). Despite the slight hiccup and delay, the fans were in high spirits throughout and appreciated every act on stage indiscriminately.
