Despite the valiant and last ditch effort made by passionate concert organisers Pineapple Concerts to reverse the sudden and unfortunate decision made yesterday by the Central Agency For Application For Filming & Performance By Foreign Artistes (PUSPAL) & the Minister For Information, Communications & Culture, YB Dato' Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim, to revoke the permit for Erykah Badu's Live In Malaysia Concert which was scheduled for tonight, it still ended in nought, forcing the organisers to officially announce its cancellation at a press conference held at the KL Convention Centre at 3pm this afternoon.
Citing the breach of guidelines set by PUSPAL for "touching on religious sensitivities and going against the cultural values of Malaysia" based on an unofficial photograph published in a local English daily showing the artiste decked in non permanent body art (mistakenly identified as tattoos) that had the words "Allah" painted on her, the organisers were officially informed of the immediate permit revocation late yesterday afternoon. Concert goers were already abuzz post lunch yesterday, after reading several tweets sent out by Dr Rais informing of the concert cancellation through his Twitter channel. The feed was picked up by both local and international media who further spread the news worldwide, creating widespread speculation whether the concert will go on, and once again putting Malaysia on the world map for all the wrong reasons.
It was twice unlucky for Pineapple Concerts and a major blow, as they once again failed to present neo soul singer songwriter Erykah Badu's immense talents to Malaysian audiences, despite the iconic star already being in Kuala Lumpur days ahead. It was also heartbreaking for the many fans who were looking forward to catching the critically acclaimed artiste live for the very first time in Malaysia.
