OIAM 3 Kuching (Sarawak) Auditions (15th November 2008)
Part 1 - 8TV Crew Arrival & Setting Up (14th November 2008)
It's not easy going out of town to conduct auditions. Rentak Sejuta joined the 8TV crew to find the best singer in Sarawak. Here's a peak at what goes on even before the auditions begin.
With so much of electronic equipment to be hand carried on board the plane, it is a wonder that airport police didn't have us all detained as a security risk.
Phew!!! Made it through security without a hitch, reflects Krishnan, while the rest of us grin as if we are guilty as hell.
Coincidence or what? 8TV gets Pintu 8 as our boarding gate.
The Kuching airport arrival lounge was a welcome relief from the cramped ride on Air Asia.
The crew group up and decide the next course action, although the first thoughts on some may have been the Marrybrown in the background.
These are just a few of the hand luggage the crew had to lug, but wait till you see all the stuff that was checked in.
Co-producer Kiedd glances at his watch to indicate that there was really not enough time for any Marrybrown chicken.
The girls were glad they had a few minutes break from carrying those heavy camera bags.
Off we go to find the rest of our load.
The crew hopes that there were enough hands (& trolleys) to receive the checked in baggage.
Camera taiko Krishnan & co-producer Zeb making sure everything arrived in Kuching.
Krishnan wondering whether his backpack is in one of the trolleys.
Looking at his pleased face it was obvious his backpack was there.
Guess who the 8TV crew found in their access luggage. (A big thank you for having me along!!!)
Rinee from the PR Department was sent along to make sure I didn't get into any mischief.
It didn't do much good as I broke ranks to take a pic of the airport entrance from a distance.
Hmm!!! The Toyota Innova doesn't look like it will handle all our load.
But try we will. 8TV boleh!!!
Especially when they had a master packer like Krishnan to squeeze everything in.
"Great, we got all the luggage packed up in the Innova but how the heck do we get out of here?"
It was already late evening as we set off against the Kuching sunset.
It was a 20 minute drive to the hotel from the airport.
The events crew (who arrived earlier in the morning) were already on hand to receive us at Merdeka Palace as we arrived.
Urggh!!! Unloading hell. Life is hard on the road ...
...but someone's got to do it.
The crew will need a lot more than one cart to haul all those equipment to the ballroom.
Finally the exhausted crew gets to check in but they have to regroup in 15 minutes to set up.
Apparently Merdeka Palace is an award winning hotel - Hotel of the Year (2000) & Best Entertainment Spot (2003). It's been a while hasn't it.
The production team checking out the event teams early set ups.
Everything is here but now comes the hard part.
The production team planning the layout of the audition room.
The girls making sure all the cameras are in working order.
Samantha briefs the hotel's banquet manager.
The hotel staff rearranging the partitions to meet with the production crews requirements.
Its a hard task repositioning the backdrop especially since bits keep coming apart.
Slowly but surely it gets moved to its new location.
The producers & the camera taikos planning out the camera angles.
A sight for sore eyes (& tired limbs) as bubbly ex 8TV crew member Zaza arrives to lend a hand.
Up goes the back drop image ...
... precisely aligned by the dilligent events crew.
Voila!!!
Shiva seems peeved at the daunting task of setting up all the mobile cams.
The waiting room is already set up to handle the arriving hopefuls the next day.
8TV young hotshots Krishnan & Zeb making sure everything is set up perfectly.
Nothing is left to chance for these two, as with all the rest of the young & dynamic crew.
Tad-dah!!! It's OIAM time again jesters co-producer Kiedd.
Every minute detail is checked, including taking mobile phone snapshots of the video screens for review later.
Guess who got to audition first?
Zeb reflects on who will be the next OIAM.
This little spot on the floor could change your life.
Everything is checked & double checked.
The crew does their walkthrough to ensure that everything will run smoothly the next day. Sam gets mobbed by "difficult contestants".
Every procedure is tested to ensure a smooth audition for the contestants.
The "difficult contestants" test out the holding room.
The production crew irons out all the foreseeable problems and set out contingencies.
Even the judging section is not left out.
The crew relax after completing their final checks for the night.
After all that hard work Kiedd thinks maybe he should try out for OIAM 3 himself.
Zeb & the girls looking over me as I am already floored from the exhaustion.
Finally we head on down to Kuching's most famous makan makan area in Satok.
Satay Reding in Satok here seems to offer more than the usual - satay kulit & satay kerapen (beef fat).
Krishnan was so hungry he was already eyeing Kiedd's satay.
Shiva doing his best Thaipusam face piercing impression. Vel!!! Vel!!!
Everything on the table finished rather quickly as the famished gang quickly wolfed everything down. Some even had seconds on the mee kolok Sarawak.
Zaza was our gracious host for the evening's escapade. Thanks for squeezing all nine of us into the MPV & finding us some Sarawak kolok mee.
Exploring Satok's open air food court in search of a 7-Eleven.
Checking out the bundle boutique.
Civilisation at last! Just kidding, ha, ha!!! Actually Kuching is not much different from KL (minus the skyscrappers).
Mahu beli apa lagi?
Audition pics (partial only) coming up ...
