For the hordes of screaming PrimaDonnas and PrimaDudes (if there were any) at South Korean boy band FT Island's first ever concert in Malaysia at Stadium Negara on 14th January 2012, it was an incredibly awesome K-ROCK night and a momentous day to boot. Especially more so since FT Island's previously scheduled concert way back in 2008 was called off at the very last minute.
By the time the PLAY! FT Island Live In KL Concert kicked off at 8:30pm as scheduled, the anticipation was already boiling over. After all the band made up of five pretty boys consisting of vocalist Lee Hong Ki, bassist and vocalist Lee Jae Jin, lead guitarist and keyboardist Choi Jong Hoon, guitarist and vocalist Song Seung Hyun and drummer Choi Min Hwan, are not your typical K-Pop phenoms. They are a legitimate band that plays their own instruments live, and are known for their versatility and dynamic range, unlike their K-Pop brethren who are quite used to performing perfectly choreographed dance routines backed by minus one tracks. This was the real deal, live, loud and loaded.
With the 6000 plus fans, many armed with yellow glow sticks (official FT Island colour), stirring them on, the Five Treasures kicked of their two hour long show, with their ever popular “I Hope” and the fun-tastic “Bing Bing Bing”, giving everyone a taste of what was to come throughout the electrifying concert that featured 23 of their top songs. Lead singer Hong Ki, with his fluid vocals, was clearly a master of the stage as he pranced about energetically leaving no space unexplored, and the fans gasping for breath, as they kept up with his every move. Group leader Jong Hoon was no slouch either with his splendid and masterful guitar work as he sensually sliced up every track with craftsman like precision, to the hard hitting and tempo perfect drumming of a more matured looking Min Hwan. Keeping the action flowing along with his thumping bass was singing bassist Jae Jin, with the wicked rap runs from Seung Hyun keeping it all current.
"Do you know what 'Yeppo' means?" Hong Ki who speaks a smartering of English, asked the ecstatic audience, just before performing the next song "A Handsome Guy & A Beautiful Girl". "When I give you the mic, you say Yeppo." he urged the crowd to sing along.
More hysteria ensued as the band belted out fan favourites "Hello Hello" and "Love Love Love", followed by some explosive head banging action with their Japanese rock tracks "Life", "I Want" and "Let It Go", causing the house to go through the roof. The rock phase, which had everyone in a frenzy, ended with "Flower Rock", before the band exited for a short but much needed break and change after being thoroughly drenched in sweat.
A video featuring the boys in their free time was screened during the break.
The band came back on and sat together in a row, to reopen with unplugged versions of the ballads, the unforgettable “Sunshine Girl” and “Confessions”. The audience loved it when drummer Min Hwan sang a verse in “Confessions”. This was followed by the quintet rendering an old K-Pop tune "Even Your Tears". “Do you know old K-Pop songs?”, bassist Jae Jin queried in English. “There are many gorgeous songs.”, he remarked before the band launched into the song.
The pace picked again with "Bad Girl", another crowd pleaser, followed by "The Man From Shinsadong", the song that won the band first place at Immortal Song 2, the competition which challenges current K-Pop stars to re-interpret Korean pop classics.
The band pulsated their way towards the end of their concert with the outstandingly performed "Will Love All", followed by "You Are Smilling Like A Doll", "Don Quixote's Song" and "Troublemaker", before dedicating "PrimaDonna" to their loyal Malaysian fans. "I hope we can meet again in the future. I will not forget a single moment today", enthused Min Hwan who was chosen to introduce the "final track".
Chants of encore could already be heard as the band quickly disappeared backstage. With momentum already built to explosive levels in the arena, the band returned for their encore in the official PLAY! tees to deliver their older hits "Love Sick" and "Until You Come Back", before wrapping up a fiery night of rocking great music with the inspiring "Like The Birds". At the end of the encore, the members took their time thanking their fans and saying how great it was to be able to perform in Malaysia. Before waving their final good-byes, Hong Ki threw his towel to the delirious fans in the Rock Zone.
The totally immersive PLAY! FT Island Live In KL was organised by concert promoters Square Roots, promoted by UnUsUal Entertainment and supported by Datz Entertainment.
