Nominees, RIM Exco, sponsors and event emcees all set for the 18th edition of AIM
The mood at the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 18, final five nominations announcements press conference at the Royal Chulan Hotel Kuala Lumpur, yesterday afternoon, was nothing less than sombre. It was quite obvious that not many were thrilled at the revamped awards show this year, with many grunts and grumbles being whispered among the attending audience, especially on the removal of some key categories and the restrictive, and slightly imbalanced qualification criteria, that leaves several hopefuls out of contention. You could pretty much cut the tension in the ballroom where the event was held with a knife.
Regardless of the cold atmosphere, a total of 75 shortlisted nominees in 18 categories, for the country's most prestigious awards show, were announced by the Recording Industry Association Of Malaysia (RIM), with a total number of 811 nominations being received compared to last year's 927. The judging and selection process by independent expert judges across the entertainment industry, was conducted by Persatuan Akademi Muzik Industri Muzik Malaysia (PAIMM) under the stewardship of industry heavyweight Jennifer Thompson, and was audited by top accounting firm Ernst & Young.
"Despite having less awards categories, the high number of AIM nominations this year is very encouraging and also posed welcome challenges for the judges," said En Rosmin Hashim, RIM AIM 18 Organising Co-Chairman. Rosmin also revealed the names of the judges who went through this year's submissions, and confirmed the retention of celebrated regional music arranger, Datuk Ramli M.S. as the Chief Judge of AIM, who has had held the post for the past two years.
It was also revealed that the Best Hip Hop Song category has been scrapped as submissions did not meet the requisite criteria.
