"He's not toasting capatis in there, mate!"
Many may not know this but the music video for Panjabi MC's ever popular 1998 hit "Mundian To Bach Ke" was filmed in Malaysia, along the walkways of pre-war shop lots similar to the ones found on Asian Heritage Row, where his most recent live performance on 19th August 2011 was held. Definitely his most recognisable song and considered the most anthemic of pop bhangra numbers, "Mundian To Bach Ke" was also featured on the 2000 Brit movie "Bend It Like Beckham" and the UK chart show Top Of The Pops, which pretty much launched Panjabi MC across the globe.
The multi award winning Punjabi music hit maker from UK was back in town once again, to heat up the dance floors, at Kuala Lumpur's newest urban entertainment destination, Water Place, with his fluid fusion of bhangra and modern dance beats. Accompanying the 2003 World Music Awards World's Best Indian Artiste on his KL foray, was upcoming Punjabi R&B singer Sunny J Takhar, from British hip hop trio Offlicense, who was roped in as the vocal front liner to support Panjabi MC during their intense two set live show, which had the clubbers on their feet throughout the night.
Although the show was supposed to kick off at 11pm, the laid back crowd only started arriving on "Indian Timing", giving credence to Panjabi MC's 2008 hit record of the same title, causing the show to start slightly later than scheduled, which was not really a big deal as the resident DJs from Water Place were already warming up the place with club favourites. Before long, DJ Rage from local rap duo Tha Boys In Tha House was on up on stage introducing the arrival of Panjabi MC on deck, to the eagerly awaiting bhangra fans.
