The Recording Industry Of Malaysia (RIM) courted displeasure from several members of the media when it announced several changes to Malaysia's most prestigious awards show, the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) at a press conference held yesterday afternoon at the Maya Hotel, in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. The most drastic of these changes to effect the 18th installment of AIM, was the cutting down of the number of categories from 29 to 19, which unfortunately included the axing of all genre specific album categories (Ethnic, Pop, Nasyid, Rock, Pop & Hip Hop), with the exception of the overall best album category.
Other significant changes were the retiming of the awards , which has been moved all the way back to 12th November this year, from its usual April-May slot, as well as as the venue, which has been relocated to the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, from its usual PWTC home of many years.
This was presented by RIM's Vice Chairman and Industry Development Committee Vice Chairman, Adrian Lim, who also announced Celcom Axiata as the title sponsors and Astro RIA & Astro ERA as the official television and radio broadcast stations, while the Persatuan Akademi Industry Musik Malaysia, headed by the experienced Jennifer Thompson will continue to assist in the coordination of the awards nomination and judging, but will no longer be involved in the production of the awards show. According to Adrian Lim, the venue change was done to enable more supporters of local artistes and the Malaysian music industry to attend the live show, at a venue with a larger seating capacity.
With the changes, the content eligibility period for potential nominees, has been extended this year to 18 months, which means all local music content released from 1st January, 2010 to 30th June 2011, will qualify to be nominated. Submissions for nominations will be open from Friday, 1st July 2010 to Friday, 29th July 2011
