Far*East Movement's (FM) #1 charting "Like A G6" has been so overplayed that you would be forgiven for thinking that there are no other tracks on the Asian American electro hop quartet's synth driven hook laden 10 track third album on their first major label release. Thankfully their second single from "Free Wired", the Teddy Ryder (from One Republic) voiced "Rocketeer" will dispel any suggestions that they are just a one trick pony. It's a gem of a track with leanings of becoming this year's "Apologise" so it was rather surprising that it has not hit the top most marker on the charts. What can be considered as the boy band's answer to The Black Eyed Peas, FM's platinum selling album is rippling with a lot more commercial hits and among them are the Keri Hilson featured "Don't Look Now", the pop sensible "White Flag" with little known Kayla Kai , the dance floor filler "She Owns The Night" with Swedish R&B singer Mohombi and the Roger Sanchez dance pop driven "2gether".
Unlike headliners BEP who have Fergie on vocals, FM seem to rely on guest vocalists to carry the melodic verses on their numbers, hence, nearly all their tracks are collaborations, with quite a few industry heavyweights lending support, including rap royalty Snoop Dogg on the delinquently spicy "If I was You (OMG)". Most of the original tracks on the album are written and produced mainly by urban producers Stereotypes (who were recently named Billboard mags Top 10 songwriters to watch out for), with Hawaian Grammy winning singer songwriter Bruno Mars sharing writing credits on three songs, including the gravity defying "Rocketeer". Which is good news for the often compared FM, considering their more luminarious peers, the eco friendly BEP are too busy recycling old tunes. BEP may have a thicker and grindier sound, but FM's simpler production is breezier and fresher, and will find favour with a more PG rated audience, especially in Asia. The fun flavoured "Free Wired" is an easy listen that will remain playing on your CD player for a while, especially if you just want to unwind after a hard day at work. But you might just want to skip the second track for a bit even if you regurlarly fly on a G6.
