Jiwa Menari Dance Off @ La Bomba, KL (28/1/11)
A RIOT OF STYLES, COLOUR & UNADULTERATED FUN FROM DANCERS WITH REAL SOUL
Story: Anastasia & Dragon Photos: Dragon
Guest performers Battleground '09 champs Katoon Network had the audience in stitches with their amorous floorplay.
After a week full of unending press conferences, The Movemint's Jiwa Menari (Soul Dance) Dance Off, at popular dance club La Bomba, last night, was a welcome respite. In fact it was one of the best nights out we had in a while, even after considering the fact that we had seen more dancers in three weeks than we could ever write about, thanks to the recent Showdown 2011 auditions. We had already published the Jiwa Menari pre-event listing in Rentak Sejuta weeks earlier, and when the ever so industrious event promoter Vandal flipped his flier into our hands at the Showdown Battles last week, we simply could not say no.
As promised Jiwa Menari, a dance contest to find Malaysia's most versatile dancer, in support of AXN's So You Think You Can Dance series, certainly had a lot of dance soul, not just from the contestants, but also from the attending audience made up of dancers and dance aficianados. You could just feel the vibe from everyone as they gyrated along with the ones vying to win the competition. Even yours truly had to resist the urge to jump in and bust into a hustle. Thankfully DJ Nesh wasn't spinning any seventies disco tunes from the Bee Gees.
The one night only solo competition, which was won by B-Boy Lil-O from commercial dance crew Floor Fever, closely mirrored SYTYCD, but with its own twist and flavor. The marathon like competition saw eleven dancers from various genres, showcasing their talent, in a multi-stage dance off, that challenged their dance acumen, creativity and stamina.
Their Jiwa is certainly in dancing.
