Anthony Meh Kim ChuanChoreographer and Managing Director (Dua Space Dance Theatre)Malaysian. Established the first Malaysian professional contemporary dance company in the year 2003. Joined the internationally acclaim Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan as a professional dancer after graduating from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He then furthered his career in United States. He has toured over 20 countries and He was describe as ¡®an outstanding male dancer and choreographer¡¯ by international critiques from, USA, Beijing, China and Singapore. In 2002, He was also invited by Cloud Gate Dance Company 2 to attend the ¡®Asia Pacific Young Choreographer Project¡¯. He presented his dance titled ¡®Verbal Abuses¡¯. His other creations were also presented in countries like Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin and Harbin in China, Seoul and Changmu in Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Kyoto, Tokyo and Nagoya in Japan and Pakistan. He was awarded the ¡®Most Distinguish Young Artist in Cultural Stage Performance¡¯ in the year 2003 for his passion and determination in the arts industry. In 2002, Due to his continuing effort, he became a certified member of UNESCO- International Dance Council in 2005. His choreography Scream- A Response to Munch was included in the dance catalogue of Cultural Projects Factory of Spain in 2005. From 2004 to 2006, he was invited by The National Theatre of Malaysia to be the choreographer for the Hang Li Po Musical and The Ma Ho Huan Musical and Lantai T. Pinkie. These productions were very well received by the audiences. Furthermore, he was also included as one out of the ten outstanding choreographers in Malaysia to present their works at The National Theatre 2004. He presented his dance piece Tropical Rainforest. In 2003, his production Dance of Flourish won ¡®The Best Dance Group¡¯ in the 2004 BOH Cameronian Arts Award. In 2005, his choreography Scream ¨CA Response to Munch won the ¡®Best Choreograper in a Full Length Production Award¡¯. In 2005 also, he was invited by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as guest lecturer to conduct a two-week dance workshop. In 2006, The National Theatre once again invited him as a choreographer for The Ma Ho Huan Musical. He is also involved as the choreographer for the musical titled Lantai T. Pinkie which is directed by The Head of Theatre Department of The National Arts Academy of Malaysia. He also had his new choreography Dance with Chinese Opera included in the Launching Kuala Lumpur Arts Festival and Blessing of Joy in ¡®Konsert Diraja¡¯ held in Istana Budaya In 2007, he choreographed a new dance-drama ¡®Hou Yi and Chang Er¡¯ which will be touring the country. In August, he will also be presenting his production ¡®Anak Malaysia¡¯ in Istana Budaya which is collaboration with Ministry of Culture, Arts of Heritage and the National Theatre. Anthony was also a writer for a column in Sin Chew Daily newspaper. Currently, he is the writer for a column Oriental Daily and Buddha magazine. Dua Space Dance Theatre
Dua Space Dance Theatre became the first professional dance company in the history of Chinese Malaysian in the eve of 2003 under the supervision of MCA President, YB Dato¡¯ Seri Ong Ka Ting, Minister of Housing and Local Government and dance critique Mr. Ou Jian Ping from Beijing, China.
The company emphasizes on a training system through contemporary and Chinese, Malay, and Indian traditional dance techniques as well as other performing skills. Creating new generation dancers to fulfill the local and international arts community an understanding of our multi-cultural living environment where our art evolves on our everyday life. It is well recognized for its down to earth but unique dance production. Our production that combines traditional and modern contemporary elements enhances our local colors making us well received by international dance critiques.
The name Dua Space brings the meaning of sharing and interaction. The company founders, Anthony Meh, the Managing Director and Aman Yap, the Artistic Director both receive scholarship to pursue Modern Contemporary Dance Studies with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Since graduated, both of them joined respective dance company in Taiwan, Hong Kong and New York, USA .In the year 1996, they founded Dua Space Dance Theatre in Hong Kong. By the year 1998, they return to they homeland Malaysia to nurture homegrown talent.
Dua Space has now performed over 364 local performances throughout Malaysia. Besides that, the company also had presented 48 overseas performances in places such as Beijing, Tianjin and Harbin in China, Seoul and Changmu in Korea, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Jakarta in Indonesia, Singapore as well as Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagoya in Japan, Pakistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The company is proud to be able to represent the country and bring Malaysian performing arts to the international scene.
In the year 2003, the company published the first dance company book in Malaysia, ¡®Dua Space Dance Theatre: The First Malaysian Chinese Professional Company¡¯. In 2004, Dua Space is awarded The Best Performance Dance Group at the 2nd Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Award. In the same year, the company was invited by Istana Budaya to collaborate in the production of the musical ¡®Hang Li Po¡¯. This musical is scheduled to tour in every state of Malaysia till 2006. In this production, Anthony was hired as a choreographer while Aman took up the main role of ¡®Admiral Ming You¡¯. In 2005, the two directors of Dua Space, Anthony and Aman were invited by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as guest lecturer to conduct a two-week dance workshop. Furthermore, Anthony was selected as a member of UNESCO International Dance Council. Also in The same year, Aman won The Best Choreographer Award and The Best Set Design Award in the 3rd BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. Following that, Anthony won The Best Choreographer in a Full-length Work Award in the 4th BOH Cameronian Arts .Awards. This production was later being invited to 23rd World Performing Arts Festival.
In 2006, Dua Space was invited by Istana Budaya to perform in the Ma Ho Huan Musical in conjunction with the National Chinese New Year Open House. In 2006, Dua Space will also be taking part in a musical directed by the Dean of Theatre Department of the National Arts Academy of Malaysia titled Lantai T. Pinkie in 2006.
In early, 2007, Dua Space will tour its newest dance-drama production ¡®Hou Yi and Chang Er¡¯ through out the country to improve the financial stability of the company. Also, to further establish the ambition of Dua Space in 2007, we have come up with a new slogan ¡®Let dance nourish the root of growing arts¡¯ as a motivation and motto. Adding to the previous motto ¡®By nurturing our own artistic style of life, let your fame recognize our devotion¡¯ Dua Space also hopes to further develop the dance arts in the country.
