Twilight ActionGirl presents PopTart (The Butter Factory, Singapore) @ BarSonic, Zouk, Jln Ampang, KL (2/7/10)
When: 10pm, Friday, 2nd July 2010
Indie deejay relations between Malaysia and Singapore: HARI INI DALAM SEJARAH.
AUG 9, 1965 - Malaysia Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, who really dug (pre-Stone Roses) indie music, rokok gulung and a good single malt session, decided upon the expulsion of Singapore from the Federation of Malaysia, leading to the independence of Singapore. As the story goes, Singapore became the only country in the history of the modern world to gain independence against its own will but the nice Tunku did give Lee Kuan Yew a few cool LPs from 1965 like The Who's "My Generation", The Beatles' "Rubber Soul", Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" plus a rare signed single of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones to start up his own indie deejay night in the Lion City. A nice gesture, don't you think?
AUGUST 30, 2005 – Nearly 40 years later and after winning the Malaysia Cup 24 times and giving the rock rakyat here the music of Sweet Charity, The Padres and Stomping Ground, Singapore's Poptart re-establishes indie deejay relations with KL's Twilight Actiongirl. The historic event, which featured bare-chested deejaying, free style diving from the decks, smoking in a club (!!!) and loads of singalong indie anthems, took place at The Loft, Zouk KL. A special bond was set in place between Poptart and TAG, a friendship filled with booze, bad-ass deejay action, rowdy moshing and non-halal mayhem (always recommended!) when and where possible.
APRIL 30, 2006 – It was still the pre-Facebook, Twitter and Twilight
days, and indie deejay nights were promoted through spam mail,
word-of-mouth and one night stands. Once again, Poptart goes to Kuala Lumpur to perform with TAG at The Loft, Zouk KL. As your trusted football bookie would have predicted and given good odds, the TAG v Poptart II night was a complete riot, with indie kids hanging from the ceiling, bulky bouncers being molested by lelaki lembut and the usual drunk suspects leaping off the sofas and bouncing off the walls. If you were there, you'd probably have the bruises to show. And yes, they all sang an Oasis tune to finish off the night. Of course, we don't remember the name of that tune ... who does any way la?
JULY 2, 2010 - More than four years later (that's one World Cup!) and a vuvuzela overdose, the love is still there between TAG and Poptart. Two deejay crews with the sort of zany and loud history to make a retired Getai-singing grandma proud. This time the Poptart deejay demolition team will make it's long awaited debut at BarSonic! You will read the Tweets, you will see the cam-whoring on FB, but you know what, it's best you be there yourself when we all get our 'Ya ya papayas' out on the dancefloor ...
