AirAsiaRedTix, AirAsia’s new events online ticketing subsidiary, along with MTV Asia, recently announced the top 10 finalists of redAMP's "Are You Asean's Best Band?", their jointly-‐organized indie and garage band competition.
The Top 10 Bands who made the cut are (in alphabetical order):
1. Bizharo (Malaysia)
2. Black Infinity (Vietnam)
3. Golden Dragon (Indonesia)
4. Karacoma (Brunei)
5. Muztava (Indonesia)
6. Pancake 80 (the Philippines)
7. SandRa (Indonesia)
8. Sixty-Ninte (Malaysia)
9. Stonebay (Malaysia)
10. Winfield (Indonesia)
The competition which was launched on 22nd May 2010 saw a total of 2,575 bands signing up by the end of the registration period on 13th June 2010, with all 10 Asean countries being represented. The top 3 submissions came from Indonesia (1,113), Malaysia (640) and The Philippines (529).
According to Ms Rafizah Amran, Head of AirAsiaRedTix, the overwhelming success of redAMP as a music platform is testimony that language, age, nationality or genre is no barrier for Asean citizens when they come together and speak via one universal language - MUSIC.
“AirAsiaRedTix.com complements the core AirAsia.com offerings and addresses the unmet needs of a completely new set of consumers and customers who are outside the traditional airport and airline passenger universe. Thanks to AirAsia’s strong regional network and established e-commerce model, AirAsiaRedTix.com is able to offer its services to customers and consumers globally. Air AsiaRedTix.com also opens up the door for customers to monetize
AirAsia’s 25 million passengers — that’s 25 million potential tickets to sell,” she added
From the entries, 20 semi-finalists were shortlisted by an internal team and were brought in to Kuala Lumpur for ‘live’ auditions, assessed by a redAMP judging panel made of Zahid Ahmad, Mac Chew, Jason Voo, and led by Chief Judge Roslan Aziz (Asia’s top music producer & ‘Malaysian Idol’ judge ). The judges then picked the top 10 bands, which were announced by Roslan via teleconference* to members of the regional media at a press conference held in Bali.
*Roslan was unable to attend the event in person due to a family member being hospitalized, but he chatted with the media and took interview questions via teleconference at the press conference.
"With over 2500 entries, the judging process was not a simple process especially when there would be one or two good ones, and then lots of average ones", said Chief Judge Roslan.
"And then, there are some bands that were good musically but could not talk or present themselves properly. We have to look at how they will appeal to the public. The character and behavior of the artistes themselves is also important. Some think they are just going to have a good time,” he told members of the media who attended the press conference.
The three qualities the judges looked out were their performances, their appeal, and their ambitions.
“We looked at their musical capability — their performance, the songs they performed, and their musical arrangements. We also looked at how appealing they are in terms of image, which is important. We also assessed their attitudes towards the competition, and took into consideration their ambitions in the music industry,” Rozlan added.
Ms Syafinaz Selamant, a popular Malaysian singer, vocal trainer and reality program judge, who liked the jazz funk group Sixty-‐Ninte, was also on hand to give her take on the competing bands.
“I really enjoyed watching the Top 20 bands’ submission videos and audition tapes,” she revealed. “Having watched them, you know how much effort, time and money they spent on it, and you can see their determination and youknow that they go all out to win.”
Ms Syafinaz alos had this advice for the bands: “The thing about music is that it is very important to be unique, and show what you can do. Be truthful to your own music — that’s the most important. I think you need to believe in what you like and what you’re good at, and I’m sure you can excel.”
“I think AirAsiaRedTix is doing a great job putting this together. It’s not only good for our music industry, but great for uniting people through music. Good job, Air Asia!”
