Julian Chan New York Project @ Alexis Bistro Ampang, Great Eastern Mall, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur (18 & 19/06/10)
When: Friday & Saturday, 10.30pm - 18 & 19/06/10
Julian Chan has been playing the saxophone professionally since the age of 21 after studying accounting in Perth, Australia. Since returning to Malaysia he has studied with English educator/ saxophonist Greg Lyons, and performed in various musical settings including the 19-piece “Emergency Brake Ensemble”, The “Greg Lyons Nonet", and the funk band “Biophonics”. Julian continues to be an active performer on the KL music scene, performing with various jazz luminaries such as Greg Lyons, David Gomes, Junji Delfino, Jose Thomas, GruvAvenue, the “KL Hardbop Band”, Michael Veerapen, Gina Panizales, Maria Angela, and Farid Ali among others, as well as running his own groups such as "The Happy People Quintet" and "Julian Chan's Boplicity". He's also one of the additional member of one of Malaysia's most active jazz outfit, WVC Trio + 1, with one album to his credit, called Eleven (released in 2009).
Not limiting himself to KL, Chan performs at music festivals throughout Southeast Asia, such Chijmes Jazz Festival, Java Jazz Festival as well as various local jazz festivals in the country. He is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York City, USA.
When not playing jazz, Julian is doing session work for various pop artists both at home and abroad. This work has taken him throughout much of Asia, most notably with Taiwanese singer/songwriter Jonathan Lee Zhong Sheng's "World Asian Tour". Other artistes Julian has worked with include Sheila Majid, Atilia, Sharizan, Ning Baizura, Yudi, Anuar Zain, Dayang Nurfaizah, among others.
The Julian Chan New York Project is a musical expression of his brief but ongoing culmination of his musical experiences in New York City, with music ranging from mainstream jazz to a slight tinge of the experimental, all meshed up into one musical unit. The New York Project will feature some of Julian's re-arrangements or standard jazz and non-standard jazz material.
Admission is free.
