Team Malaysia - WCOPA 2024 Winners (6/07/2024)
TEAM MALAYSIA DOES NATION PROUD WITH 37 MEDAL HAUL & A GRAND CHAMPION OF THE WORLD TITLE AT WCOPA 2024!
Team Malaysia who competed at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2024 in Long Beach, California recently, made our nation proud by winning a total of 37 medals including 13 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 13 bronze medals. The team also won 11 division titles and a Grand Champion of the World title, which went to 13-year-old Ummi Umairah Abdulah in the junior vocal category. Another of the junior delegates Aleysha Shareef Van De Horst also won a scholarship to study at the New York Film Academy. Aleysha also picked up a gold in vocals (Broadway) in the junior category as well as its Division title. She also bagged a bronze medal in the junior duo pop vocal category with her brother
It was a triumphant victory for the entire team as no one was left empty-handed.
The biggest winner was Umairah who landed not only the gold medal in the R&B/Soul/Jazz category and the Division title but also the much sought-after Grand Champion of the World title. The last time a Malaysian won the Grand Champion of the World title was singer Aina Abdul in 2014.
Also winning big was guitar-totting Kelvin Thein from Melaka, who won 3 gold medals and 3 division titles in the vocal with accompaniment (25-29) category for country, open & variety divisions and a silver in the rock division.
Another 3 gold medals for vocals (30 +) in the Broadway, Open & Rock divisions went to Norziyah Yahya, the oldest delegate in Team Malaysia at 50. Norziyah also picked up a division title in the open division.
The famed "Little Borneon Birdie", 8-year-old Dion Das Anak Lois from Sarawak, bagged a gold medal for dance (8-10) in the ethnic division, and its division title. Dion also confidently picked up a modelling gold in the photoshoot division along with its division title, and the modelling silver in the formal & casual divisions.
Not missing out on an open division gold in the junior vocal (8-10) category was Taylor Louise Fong Thien Xin. She also picked up the division winner's title.
Also picking up a music (24-29) gold medal in the original works division was sape' player Stanford Ryan Anak Sidi from Sibu, Sarawak. He was also its division winner.
Although popular Bajau dancer Emeraazwa Emeraldi from Semporna, Sabah, missed out on the medals in the dance category, she surprised everyone with a petite modelling gold and silver in the formal & casual divisions respectively. Despite not winning any medals in her core dance category, Emeraazwa is still one of the best ethnic dancers in the nation and is a tribute to her state of Sabah. Her recent Bajau dance performance video in Rentak Sejuta has garnered close to 400K views and is still climbing.
