Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In (In Cinemas 1/05/2024)
Introduction
Set in the eighties inside the dangerous and enigmatic Kowloon Walled City, which was a de jure Chinese enclave within British colonial Hong Kong, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In follows troubled youth Chan Lok-kwun as he accidentally enters the Walled City, discovers the order amidst its chaos, and learns important life lessons along the way. In the Walled City, he becomes close friends with Shin, Twelfth Master and AV. Under the leadership of Tornado, they resist the invasion of villain Mr. Big in a series of fierce battles. Together, they vow to protect the safe haven that is Kowloon Walled City.
Synopsis
In the 1980s, Hong Kong has become a global economic powerhouse. Ethnic Chinese from overseas cross the sea to reach the city. Among them is young Chinese-Vietnamese man Chan Lok-kwun, who is using Hong Kong as a transit point after making the perilous journey across the sea. Though there is little chance that he will be able to emigrate elsewhere, Lok risks his life as an underground fighter to make the money he needs to secure a better life.
However, Lok is such a skilled fighter that he attracts the attention of the powerful Mr. Big. He tells Lok that he can secure a passport for him, but his true intention is to rob Lok of his life savings and force Lok to work for him. Far from being a docile sheep, Lok takes revenge by stealing Mr. Big’s shipment. When Mr. Big puts out an underworld bounty on him, Lok unwittingly enters the infamously enigmatic Kowloon Walled City for safety and ends up crossing paths with Tornado, the Walled City’s leader.
Mr. Big invades the Walled City to capture Lok, but when Tornado fights back to protect the Walled City, he also indirectly ends up protecting Lok as well. The Walled City has always been a claustrophobic place with its own laws. As long as Lok doesn’t do anything to disturb its order, Tornado agrees to let Lok stay and start with a clean slate.
Tornado was once an underworld legend in the 1960’s and 70’s. Though he is feared and revered outside, everyone inside the Walled City knows him for his benevolent nature. This is why he lent a helping hand to Lok, a mere stranger who has been pushed into a corner.
Aside from small businesses, the Walled City also has many workshops, making it one giant factory. Tornado helps Lok find work and settle down. Lok’s once-turbulent life has now found peace. Once a lonely soul, Lok now lives among the residents of the Walled City, including close friends Shin, Twelfth Master and AV.
Tornado has given Lok the first taste of real life. After spending most of his life adrift, Lok seems to have found a place worth living in and people worth caring for.
When the Sino-British Joint Declaration is signed, Hong Kong’s colonial government secretly makes plans to demolish the Walled City and prepares a large sum of money for compensation. To ensure the demolition goes smoothly, British police officials recruit Mr. Big, using criminals to fight criminals. King, Mr. Big’s right hand man, suggests an alliance with Chau, the Walled City’s biggest landlord, resurrecting a grudge from the past to start a war inside the Walled City. It turns out that Lok’s father was Jim, the notorious “King of Killers” who murdered Chau’s family.
Tornado has been Chau’s best friend for many years, but he is also a close confidante of Jim. During the Battle of the Walled City many years ago, Tornado and Jim found themselves facing each other in battle. After Jim died in the fight, Tornado fulfilled Jim’s final request by sending Lok away, but fate ends up bringing Lok back many years later. Chau nearly gets his long-awaited revenge by killing Lok, but Tornado steps in and stops Chau. This ends their friendship once and for all.
To get revenge, Chau hires Mr. Big to hunt down Lok. Taking advantage of the situation, Mr. Big invades the Walled City to take Tornado’s place.
As the Walled City is attacked from all sides, Lok finds himself in danger. Tornado is caught in a fierce battle against Mr. Big as he tries to send Lok away and protect the Walled City. However, Tornado is defeated and killed due to weakening health from his illness. Shin, Twelfth Master and AV also go missing during their fight to protect Lok.
After successfully taking over the Walled City, Mr. Big turns the tables on Chau, seizing his properties to become the kingpin of the Walled City. In one swift stroke, the Walled City returns to the chaotic state of the 1960’s. However, King seizes the opportunity to stage a coup and kills Mr. Big. As the new overlord, King is even more ruthless than his former employer, bringing guns-for-hire from across the border into the Walled City. Under King’s rule, life in the Walled City is more miserable than ever.
After Lok recovers from the attack, he decides to regroup and stay in the Walled City. For his friends and for his new home, he must reclaim what he has lost.
A battle of life and death is about to unfold.
