First time ever in the history, Hong Kong International Musician Association (IMA-HK) is holding “The 11th International Vocal Open Competition 2024” in Kuala Lumpur from 29th January to 2nd February 2024. This is another milestone for Malaysia as a global music hub.
After making the history with a trio of international open competitions - Vocal, Piano & String running concurrently for Malaysia Division in June 2023, HOM Music is bringing the contestant to another exciting experience by hosting the Malaysia Preliminary contests of “The 11th International Vocal Open Competition 2024” at Dominus Arts Venue, Kuala Lumpur on 10th December 2023 (Sunday).
It is time for the contestants to showcase their talents in 8 categories ranging from Opera, Art Song, Folk Songs, Pop Song, Children Song, Contemporary A Cappella, Choral to Musical Theatre. Various choices of categories/classes and repertoires also enable each contestant to tailor their performance to their unique strengths and musical style.
Besides having the chance to embark on a profound artistic journey on an internationally recognized platform, the contestants also will be receiving individualized feedback from an esteemed panel of judges.
ONLINE Registration for Malaysia Preliminary is now open to all nationalities for RM 190.00 / RM 240.00 (Open Class) / RM 120.00 (Contemporary A Cappella & Choral), per person per class.

This high-profile event, unique in its nature, has an extraordinary purpose: to foster the evolution of music at a professional and artistic standard, while providing a launchpad for Malaysia talents to make its mark on the world stage.
All contestants will receive a certificate award issued by IMA-HK, based on their attained marks. Additionally, tutors of winners of the First-Class Award will receive an "Excellent Tutor" certificate in recognition of their work.
The contestants who achieve the Third-Class Award or higher (80 marks or above) in the Preliminary rounds will have the chance to compete in the Final.
Our Malaysia finalists won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes respectively in the last “The 10th Hong Kong International Vocal Open Competition”, “2023 Hong Kong International String Competition” and “2023 Chopin Memorial Prizes Hong Kong International Piano Open Competition” held in Hong Kong. These proud winners are Vocal - Ms. Hii Yi Qing (Class 4.4 – 2nd Prize), Ms. Liu Li Jia (Class 9.5 – 2nd Prize), Ms. Sooreyaa a/p Nadesan (Class 6.2 – 3rd Prize), Mr. Li Long (Class 9.4 – 3rd Prize); String - Li Zhu Chen (Class 1-29 – 2nd Prize), Piano - Chen Jay Hou (Class 21 – 1st Prize), Ivania & Esther (Class 30 – 1st Prize), Wong Yoong Qi (Class 59 – 1st Prize). Malaysia Preliminary brings together some of the most respected figures in the music world, including educators, performers, and musicians as panel judges such as Ms. Cecilia Yap, Dr. Yap Jin Hin, Mr. Cha Seng Tiang, Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, Ms. Chew Paul Wah and Mr. Abraham Tee. Their collective experience and expertise will undoubtedly add prestige to this international event.

Cecilia Yap
Malaysia soprano Cecilia Yap is currently an active singer in the country’s musical scene. An alumnus of Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome, Yap’s vocal style is in the vein of the Italian bel canto tradition, taught to her by renowned singers Lorraine Nawa Jones Marenzi, and Arte Scenica opera directors Marcello Ferroni and Marcella Govoni, to name a few. While in Italy, Yap won the 7th Cascinalirica International Vocal Competition (1994), in which she was the only Asian finalist. The country’s magazine L’Opera described Yap as a singer with a “dramatic flair, refined vocal expression and interpretation.”

Dr. Yap Jin Hin
Dr. Yap Jin Hin, a Doctor of Musical Arts graduate from Louisiana State University and a protégé of the noted American tenor, Robert Grayson. Dr. Yap Jin Hin has appeared in leading roles with a number opera companies in the United States. Among his performances are Anatol in Vanessa with the Nevada Opera; Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville; Tamino in The Magic Flute with both Opera Louisiane and the Acadiana Symphony. In 2012 he performed Rodolfo in La Bohème with Opera in the Ozarks. At the Italian festival La Musica Lirica he sang Alfredo in La Traviata. His wide-ranging repertoire includes performances of Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, the title role in Romeo et Juliet, and the Narrator (Male Chorus) in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.

Cha Seng Tiang
Penang-born Cha Seng Tiang is a full scholarship recipient of the Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts after winning the 1988 Malaysia National Art Song Singing Competition. There, he studied under renowned international opera singer Michael Rippon. In summer 1991, Seng Tiang was invited to Sapporo, Japan to participate in the Pacific Music Festival where he performed Leonard Bernstein’s Songfest and Chichester Psalms under the baton of maestro Michael Tilson Thomas and Michael Barret. He also took part in recitals and concerts under the guidance of Paul Sperry in different cities in Hokkaido, Japan.

Datuk Mokhzani Ismail
Datuk Mokhzani Ismail is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger and Music Director for the longest running orchestra RTM (Radio Television Malaysia). Graduated from Berklee College of Music Boston USA in piano performance and orchestration. He composed song for Ernie Zakri, Adibah Noor Saleem and others. He has also conducted the Malaysian philharmonic Orchestra for Chris Botti (Jazz trumpetist) Asia Tour and also lead the RTM orchestra during their performance in Java Jazz Festival Jakarta and Bangkok International Jazz Fest. He was also the conductor for Lefthanded n Rockestra recently. Datuk Mokhzani has been appointed as adjunct professor with University Malaya and recognised by Malaysia Book of Records as the first Malaysian to be an endorsee for an International piano brand and travelled intensively to Beijing, and Shanghai from 2016-2019. He was appointed as Chief Jury in TV3 Anugerah Juara Lagu from 2021-2023 , Chief Jury in Anugerah Industry Muzik 23 (AIM) and others.

Chew Paul Wah
Chew Paul Wah, known as the first Chinese female pop singer-songwriter in Malaysia, started her singing career in 1990 and has released popular albums like 'Ni Zhi Liu Xia Ji Mo' and 'Ai Wo Gei Wo Zi You'. With notable awards including the 1992 Best Album of the Year in Taiwan, Paul Wah is renowned as a jingle vocal talent, producer, composer, and backup singer. She has toured worldwide, featuring in concerts and musicals like 'Siddhartha'. She has also taught pop vocal since 1992, instructed for Astro Talent Quest, and judged numerous competitions. Currently, she teaches vocal techniques at Paul Wah Productions.
Started singing career in 1990,is known to be the first Chinese female pop singer-songwriter in the local music scene. Pop Albums released include – Ni Zhi Liu Xia Ji Mo, Ai Wo Gei Wo Zi You, Chew Paul Wah Vol 3 etc.

Abraham Tee
Abraham Tee is a multiple award-winning music producer in Malaysia. After completed his tertiary education in Hotel Management, Abraham venture into the music industry. His first big break was co-writing and produced a song for a well-known duo – Michael & Victor (Rock Records) in 1997 and never look back since.

Started in 2018 in experiential learning and educational activities, HOM Music soon focusing in music exploration. Together with our partners and stakeholders, HOM Music started its first music project – “The Prison Strings Ensemble: Rhythm of Freedom” service project with the aim to transform the lives of young juvenile inmates through music. Subsequently, we showcased talented local young singers through song recordings, online music platforms and stage performance to realize their dreams despite the harsh environment of the pandemic.
HOM Music managed the launch of the “New Malaysia’s National Occupational skills Standard (NOSS)” for the Music Teaching Industry by the Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran, Kementerian Sumber Manusia and music conference titled “MU21C: Music Education for the 21st Century” held on 5th & 6th of October 2019 at ASWARA together with the event partners Akademi Seni Budaya Dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) and Malaysia Music Teachers Training College (MMTC). MU21C, a two-day music education conference features a series of workshops, presentations, panel discussions, masterclasses and coaching classes. The speakers and performers combined local and international input with participating experts from Malaysia and UK include representatives from specialist music schools, renowned institutions, professionals and experts from UK and Malaysia such as St Mary's Music school, Drums for Schools, Collins Music, Music Teacher’s Board, National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN), Sunway University and ASWARA.
HOM Music also co-organised “The 8th International Vocal Competition 2020” – Malaysia Circuit Audition with Aswara on 4th and 5th January 2020 at ASWARA. The audition attracted 161 participants hailed from all walks of life and across Malaysia, from young age to highly experienced, award-winning vocalists for classical and pop songs. The esteemed judges include Ms. Yeoh Ker Ker, Mr. Mak Chi Hoe, Dr. Pang Kong-Chien, Datuk Syafinaz Selamat, Ms. Jess Teong and Madam Chew Paul Wah. These judges are experienced performers, dedicated educators and leaders who are well-renowned in their respective fields.

The Malaysia Division of 2023 Hong Kong International Open Competition – Vocal, Piano & String in June 2023 garnered the attention of 240 contestants, with a remarkably diverse profile ranging from vocalists, pianists, and string musicians, participants from all over Malaysia and from as far afield as Russia, Germany, China, Indonesia, and Singapore.
The past event was supported by the respected figures as Jury Panel such as Datuk Syafinaz Selamat, Dr. Yap Jin Hin, Elaine Pao, Helen Yap, Fauzi Marzuki, Lee Nai Kong, Chew Paul Wah, Boy Razak, Loo Bang Hean, Dr. Joanne Yeoh Pei Sze, Samuel Tan Hsien Chih, Dr. Khoo Khe Sin, Ysan Suit Yin, Jaz Tan, Ramlan Bin Mohd Imam, Ion Mazur, Mayya Musaeva and Dr. Yeoh Pei Ann.
Year 2023, HOM Music is bringing the contestant to another exciting experience for hosting the Malaysia Preliminary contests of "The 11th International Vocal Open Competition 2024” on 10th December 2023 (Sunday). This preliminary contest offers 8 categories/sessions namely Opera, Art Song, Folk Songs, Pop Song, Children Song, Contemporary A Cappella, Choral and Musical Theatre with various classes and repertoires, enabling each contestant to tailor their performance to their unique strengths and musical style.
