Asia Talents Search 2022 Semi Final which was held at The Platform in Menara KEN in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, last night, saw 22 contenders vying for one of 12 spots for the finals. Unfortunately one had to pull out during the competition for personal reasons.
It was clear that the level of talent showcased by all 21 contenders was extremely high, thus making it difficult for the judges and also the voting public from picking the rightful qualifiers to the finals. Nevertheless, there were a few standouts that were a cut above the rest, especially among the younger ones, easily taking the Asia Talents Search 2022 competition to the next level.
The competition was organised by the International Celebrity Pageant Group which is helmed by spirited young entrepreneur Lennard Tan and was presented by MK Group, an organisation with diversified business interests. Organiser Lennard Tan, entertainers Ash Lu & Nick Kong and OnMuse CEO Ong Peng Chu were the official judges for the night.
Topping the leaderboard was Bennet Soo Jia Ong who wowed the audience with an intense piano performance of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song, and closed it with an energetic but simulated tap dance showcase, that had the audience roaring with approval.
Also impressing the crowd with their sharp, energetic and on-point performance and exciting choreography was the seven-member dance troop Kingsman who were top of the leaderboard until Soo dislodged them into the second spot.
Opening the competition were comedic magical duo The Gents who conjured their way into the third spot by the end of the night.
On the singing front, Lim Yue Zhen and Chan Jie Yee won favour with the judges and the audience with their impressive, powerful and on-pitch vocal performances, despite their tender ages, to take fourth and fifth respectively on the leaderboard.
The ultra-flexible Grace Tan leapt her way into sixth with an exquisite mix of ballet and contemporary while Bernard Teoh Kim Ong transformed his always-in-character broken-down mech performance into seventh on the leaderboard and a place in the finals.
Fionne Kok Li Xuan drummed, sang and danced her way into the finals by taking the eighth spot on the leaderboard while edging dynamic rock singer-songwriter Kevin Thein of Kevin's Acoustic Duo into ninth.
Four-girl dance troupe Girlatari presented a visually appealing ethno-fusion dance performance that had the crowds cheering in appreciation. But they were slightly off with their synchronization and were not as tight as they should have been, resulting in them making the finals in tenth. They are strong contenders but really need to go the extra mile if they hope to make it to the very top against such outstanding peers.
We were quite surprised that Puteri Dullilah was placed eleventh. Despite an outstanding, imaginative and super on-point dance showcase that mixed elements of traditional and hip hop in such an engaging manner, and receiving among the loudest cheers from the crowd, she was not among the leaders of the pack. Her performance was super tight and world-class.
She was what we call the real deal in dance and sincerely hope that the judges and audience during the finals will see it for what it is and reward her accordingly.
Making the final cut was FSWAG, another impressive young dance troop that deserved its spot in the finals.
