Indie Concerts In Malaysia 2008
2008 was a great year for indie concerts in Malaysia. Apart from the hundreds of local indie gigs that were staged throughout the nation, we also saw a host of international and regional indie stars making their way to our shores. Their arrival in Malaysia, also gave local promoters the opportunity to showcase many top and upcoming local acts during these much sought after or sold out shows.
These gig fliers seen here are just a fraction of what we have kept since 2008. We have boxes of these gig fliers in storage, saved for posterity, hopefully to be displayed in an indie music museum which we hope to establish one day. These physical bill's are now considered collector's items and represent Malaysia's rich and diverse independent music scene.
Rentak Sejuta spent so much of our time and energy covering all of these gigs from the early years. We were also officially supporting many of these gigs as their media partners.
So many international acts managed make their way here in 2008 including Comeback Kid, Sick Of It All, Driven Fear, The Living Dead, Soilwork, Mono as seen in the fliers here, as well as many others. Indie music lovers were bombarded with all kinds of genres - punk, hardcore, grindcore, death metal, thrash metal, death metal, grunge, industrial, ska, reggae - to name a few.
2008 also saw many local indie bands making regular appearances in the music scene.
Restraint, Plague of Happiness, Second Combat, Love Me Butch, Cassandra, Kids On The Move, Agrobeats, Steeltoe, A.C.A.B., Oh Chentaku, Couple, Mouthful Of Air, Deadscore, Devilica, The Dearly Missed, Arheum Revert, Decma, They Could Have Been, Forbidden Culture, Elemental Gaze, Sil Khannaz, KoffinKanser, Incarnation, Damikis, Bittersweet, Butterfingers, Meet Uncle Hussain, OAG, One Buck Short, Pinheads, Roots N Boots, Republic of Brickdmfields, Sinopsis, Skudap Skudip, The Pilgrims, The Times, The Times, They Will Kill Us All, StonesGarden, The Pilgrims are among the few we have space to mention for now.
Other than international indie concerts, we had a fair share local indie festivals too. The much heralded KL Indie Fest, held at KL Tower comes to mind first. There were many other great ones, but this one simply stands out for its diverse line up, it's perfect festival title and also its iconic venue.
Fans of indie music are welcome to visit us to check out indie music scene collections. Contributions to our repository are also most welcome - CDs, vinyls, tapes, fliers, posters, ticket stubs, zines, merchandise, instruments etc.
Long live the indie music scene in Malaysia. If you have been or have been part of the events featured herein, do give us a shout.
Footnote:
Thirteen years on, the indie music scene is being honoured again with the second Anugerah Lagu Indie awards this year. 757 nominations were received, with 200 being shortlisted. 30 have made the semifinals. Stay tuned as we bring you more on the awards over the next few weeks. Rentak Sejuta: Southeast Asia's #1 Music & Performing Arts News Site is one of the supporting media partners of the awards for the last two years.
