Post-Lockdown 3.0 Live Shows @ KLPAC
Post-Lockdown 3.0
Live Shows, A Birthday & Heartfelt Tributes.
After four long months, klpac welcomes fully-vaccinated audiences back just in time for its Co-Founder’s birthday month. Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican is set to direct not one but
two productions, Life Sdn Bhd: Differences from 7 to 10 October 2021 and Experiencing Usman Awang from 21 to 24th October 2021. Both live shows are presented by The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat at klpac’s Pentas 2. Night shows are at 8.00 pm and matinee shows are at 3.00 pm.
Curated by the director, planned and rehearsed through the pandemic and lockdown, both productions are dear to her heart for different reasons.
Life Sdn Bhd was The Actors Studio’s first show after the 2003 Dataran floods.
Reflecting on the loss, she concluded that this is life, sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down. That was how Life Sdn Bhd was coined. Since then the series has brought to light many real stories by real people on breast cancer, refugees, abuse, people living with HIV, human trafficking and most recently, Voices of the Young.
Commenting on this year’s theme, Faridah Merican said “Malaysia is made up of very different people. Until I embarked on this topic, I didn't realise how different or what kind
of problems our people endured. One after another, they revealed the issues they were facing because they felt, behaved or were just different from others.” “Life Sdn Bhd does not discriminate and does not censor. We take what they have to say – all true stories. All you have to do is to listen, some will shock you, some will upset you, and some will make you feel thankful. Brave is the word. If you dare to be different or learn to accept differences, you are a brave person. People may not know what to expect but after every Life Sdn Bhd show, they will walk out feeling touched. Let’s heal
one another while we can.”
Life Sdn Bhd: Differences, supported by CENDANA, MyCreative Ventures and PENJANA, features eight brave storytellers aged 16 to 49: Adry Bashir, alumnus of klpac’s Theatre for Young People (T4YP) programme; Amina, a mathphile passionate about data analysis; Ayushna, an optometrist by profession and a trained dancer by passion; educators cum writers, Cherry Coco and Cordelia Lee; homeschooler Hannah Ling; mental health writer and content creator, Joanna Noelle; and theatre student Seri.
Life Sdn Bhd: Differences is dedicated to Peter Tan, a Disability Equality Training (DET) facilitator, as we remember his lifelong work advocating for disability rights, improving access for disabled persons and promoting inclusion in society.
Right after, we celebrate and honour the life of another dear friend of Faridah’s.
Experiencing Usman Awang is a tribute to the renowned poet, playwright, novelist, National Laureate and national treasure Allahyarham Dato’ Usman Awang.
Directed by Faridah as well, it will present and explore some of his most-loved works which revolve around love, compassion, unity and the spirit of togetherness, which Malaysia needs as it emerges from a catastrophic year. Some of the works showcased include “Sahabatku”, “Scattered Bones”, “Merpati Putih, Jelajahilah Dunia Ini” and “Kekasih” in various languages and forms.
In line with NSC’s SOPs, only fully-vaccinated individuals aged 18 and above are permitted to attend live performances. klpac has comprehensive Covid-19 measures including vaccination verification and health status screening, compulsory mask-wearing, pre and post-show Covid-19 testing for the cast and crew, physical distancing measures, sanitisation and disinfection, visitor education, going contactless and staff training.
Tickets can be purchased only online via www.cloudtix.co/ soon (no phone or over-the-counter sales, only e-tickets will be issued). Each ticket sold goes towards keeping klpac and The Actors Studio afloat. The public can also make a donation via www.klpac.org/donations/.

Title: Life Sdn Bhd: Differences Presenters: The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat & The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac)
Supporters: MyCreative Ventures, CENDANA & PENJANA
Synopsis: Life Sdn Bhd has been touching many of us in many ways, since the
beginning of this series which began in 2004. We began with What It
Means to be Malaysian, for 3 years, performed by actors and non-actors.
Patrick Teoh then quipped…Aiya Faridah, after 3 years cukuplah, what else is there to say…
So, so wrong Patrick. There was so much more to say then and even more now. Life then moved on to personal issues that confronted us such as breast cancer, abuse, refugees, human trafficking, people living with HIV and AIDS ending last year with Voices of the Young. Differences however do touch the nerves in a way we never expected. Differences brings out the real stories from real people that we think would touch your raw nerve but yet smile, chuckle or hide that pain behind a laugh. Whatever.
Life Sdn Bhd was created in the aftermath of the devastating 2003 floods that destroyed The Actors Studio’s iconic space at Plaza Putra underneath Dataran Merdeka. Now, it will be the very production that reopens klpac after its third lockdown and an equally devastating year due to the pandemic. Directed by Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican, come listen to real stories by real people as told by Adry Bashir, Amina, Ayushna, Cherry Coco, Cordelia Lee, Hannah Ling, Joanna Noelle and Seri.
