Lockdown Listen Day 51 (02/09/2021)
Day 51 of Lockdown Listen on Thursday, 2nd September 2021 got us down and dirty with the roots of rock & roll, which evolved from the various incarnations of blues, jazz and soul that begun in the early 1900's along the Mississippi basin:
87. When The Sun Goes Down: The Secret History of Rock & Roll (Bluebird)
Vol. 1: Walk Right In
Vol. 2: The First Time I Met The Blues
Vol. 3: That's Chicago South Side
Vol. 4: That's All Right
Most of the music from the era may have been lost forever but thanks to phonograph recording pioneer The Victor Talking Machine Company which was formed in 1901, some of these songs have been preserved for posterity. The company was eventually acquired by Radio Corporation of America to become RCA Victor, and just RCA later on. But that's another story.
These 4 discs contain a splendid account of the historical and evolutionary journey of music that became the basis of rhythm & blues (R&B) and eventually rock & roll as we know it today.
Unexpectedly, this raw but authentically energetic compilation hit all the right notes with our publisher Anastasia who was originally weaned on a diet of Celine Dion, Lee Ann Rhymes, Trisha Yearwood, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Madonna. She simply could not get enough, going through all 4 discs in one go and then back on repeat again, while trying to mimic vocally the bluesy mood of each track and dancing in her own way to the uptempo numbers. Being a "kampung girl" who self-made herself, she connected instantly and organically with what was being played and sung.
It was quite incredible how music from a century ago could move someone from the pop generation of today.
The early years of musical history is well documented in this box set, most of it tracing through the 11 states in which the Mississippi river (a.k.a. Mississippi Country) flows through, where the roots of American music originates from.
Most of these tracks may be found in popular streaming and download platforms but we strongly recommend you to locate the box set, most likely available on eBay or Amazon, perhaps even at the flea market at Amcorp Mall in PJ when they re-open.
If you are serious about music, this should be in your collection.
