International Jazz series - Aya Sekine & The Lewis Pragasam Band
April 9th & 10th
Born in Osaka Japan, Aya’s childhood was spent between Singapore and Japan until 1990. Her study of piano and intensive ear training began at the tender age of four years old followed by a brass band, an association that would last eight years. Her musical experiences in the band embraced the family of percussion instruments ranging from drums to vibraphones where Aya developed a strong and vibrant rhythmic impression.
Aya went on to study music in the US and graduated from Berklee College in 1994, during which time she was introduced to jazz especially, bebop. Upon graduation she moved to the music capital of the world, New York City where she was exposed to every sort of music from Brazilian music to freestyle and experimental improvisation.
After spending nine years in New York City, she returned to Singapore where she became resident pianist at Jazz@Southbridge until 2009. Well known as "crazy Japanese pianist", but with in depth experiences and wide range of influences, Aya is an extremely talented, experimental and open minded artist who’s real art of expression comes through the piano.
Aya will be joined by Malaysia’s legendary Lewis Pragasam’s band with special guest artists.
