Lockdown Listen Day 18 (30/07/2021)
Day 18 of Lockdown Listen yesterday saw us listening to a variety of music:
41. Asza (Asza Music)
42. Tom Jones - Reload (Gut/V2)
43. Fresh (WEA/EMI)
"Asza" is an excellent and pioneering world fusion band that features a string of Vancouver, Canada based musicians that performed from 1991 to 2003, who usually showcased up to 100 types of instruments from the world over. They have toured the globe including a stint in Malaysia.
This exciting self titled 11-track album features founding member & virtuoso pipa player Qiu Xia He from China, group leader & multi-instrumentalist Randy Raine-Reusch, percussionist Joseph 'Pepe' Danza from Uruguay, Flamenco guitarist, oud player & world percussionist Andre Thibault and guest bassist extraodinaire Namateet Mollerup.
More than 50 instruments are used on this recording, as the band unfolds their own original work based on cleverly fused music and sounds from a variety of cultures. If you are into world music, this should be in your collection. If not, this will make a refreshing and stimulating introduction.
"Reload" released in 1999 is surprisingly veteran crooner Tom Jones' best selling album. It reached #1 in the UK music charts. It presents Jones, who is known for his signature full throated baritone, covering popular cover songs, in duet with 15 prominent acts of the time, except for a remake of his own song and "Sex Bomb", a new song performed in collaboration with Mousse T. The hip dance track went to #3 on the UK charts.
Among the acts featured on the album include The Cardigans, Stereophonics, Robbie Williams, Simply Red, Natalie Imbruglia and Portishead.
The perky album is thoroughly enjoyable and welcomes repeat listens.
The 16-track "Fresh" released in 1999 is a satisfying showcase of the alternative rock scene (mostly) in the late nineties. Among the acts featured include Manic Street Preachers, Third Eyed Blind, R.E.M., Collective Soul & Alanis Morisette. It still sounds fresh today.
