Lockdown Listen Day 17 (29/07/2021)
We could not stop listening to this album the whole Day 17 of Lockdown Listen yesterday:
40. Manu Chao - Clandestino (Virgin)
You know you have a winner when you simply can't remove this from your CD player. "Clandestino" the epic 16-track 1998 debut solo album from multilingual singer-songwriter, musician & producer Manu Chao is not only a killer album but it can also pass the test of time. Even after 23 years, it feels like it was released yesterday and can easily find itself on any chart anywhere in the world today. Manu Chao is French of Spanish descent and his music is centered around a stimulating mix of alternative Latin, reggae, ska and worldbeat, ingeniously blended together only in a way he can.
We only got introduced to the music of Manu Chao when we published his live concert date at klpac last year. Unfortunately his KL date was cancelled due to the global pandemic and we sadly missed watching his much heralded live showcase.
"Clandestino" is rightly listed in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" and was ranked number 469 in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2020.
We only got hold of this album about a couple of weeks ago, and are thrilled that it is now part of our collection. It is a highly recommended listen. If you are thinking of your next music purchase this should be it.
Don't buy digital, buy the physical album instead as you don't want to miss having the striking and vibrant artwork that is part of its colourful sleeve notes. You can find it through Amazon or Discog.
