Lockdown Listen Day 9 (21/07/2021)
Day 9 of Lockdown Listen yesterday saw us enjoying the following:
26. Orbital - In Sides (FFRR)
27. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, Volume 2 (BMG/Arista)
28. The Original Flying Pickets * Volume 1 (Warner)
"In Sides" released in 1996 is a reflectively downtempo album filled with intricately crafted melodies by British electronic duo Orbital and is considered as one of their best works. This is another of those albums that draws you in and keeps you suspended in an highly elated state for its entire duration. Its a complex piece of work, disguised in raw simplicity and is cleverly crafted to lift your mind and soul.
Lilith Fair was a travelling music festival created by Sarah McLahan & partners, solely for women (or women led bands) in the late nineties. It ran for just 4 years (1997-99, revived in 2010) and was discontinued due to changing audiences expectations and views. Volume 2 features a stellar collection of diverse and highly engaging acts that performed at the travelling fair in 1999, and is strictly not for casual listeners. The 14-track album includes artistes such as Sinead O' Connor, Angelique Kidjo, Morcheeba, Lisa Loeb, Queen Latifah and Sarah herself. To truly enjoy and appreciate this album, you have to recreate a similar live atmosphere with your audio playback, so a decent hi fi system is highly recommended. And you will also have to play it a tad louder than you always do. Streaming is also out of the question, get it on CD or vinyl.
British a capella group The Flying Pickets, well known for their unique vocal performances of pop tracks, came to prominence after their outstanding vocal rendition of Yazoo's "Only You" took the world by storm during Christmas of 1983. The mega hit was written by Depeche Mode's Vince Clark, and was originally performed by Clark & Alison Moyet as Yazoo, and reached #2 on the UK Charts in 1982. The Flying Pickets took it to #1 in the UK and several other countries a year later. Then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also declared The Flying Pickets' "Only You" as her favourite song, despite the vocal group's socialist leanings.
The Original Flying Pickets Volume 1 features the original members of the group performing a capella covers of hit songs from the likes of Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Prince, Van Halen, Sam Cooke and many others. Of course, their groundbreaking "Only You" is included in this nice to have but not essential showcase of the group.
You should be able to find all these albums via streaming services but we encourage you to find a physical copy of Lilith Fair to truly enjoy it.
