Lockdown Listen Day 8 (20/07/2021)
Day 8 of Lockdown Listen yesterday saw us experiencing the following:
24. Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman (Junior Recordings/V2 Music)
25. Unconditionally Guaranteed 2 Mar 99 (Uncut Magazine)
"dubnobasswithmyheadman" is the visionary third studio album from British electronic music group Underworld, who switched over from synth pop to techno and progressive trance.
Despite every track being two to three times longer than a typical pop track, the album simply works, with each track beginning in one way and possibly ending up in another. Never a dull moment here, as the album draws you in deep and never lets you go. This is tonic for the brain and soul. Most may remember their massive hit "Born Slippy" in 1995, but this 1994 offering is where you really must start. Our favourite track on this critically acclaimed album is the 13-minute long "Mmm... Skyscraper I Love You", but everything else is just equally a revelation. Glad this album is in our collection.
After the intense mindstorm of Underworld, the mellow and soothing output from Uncut Magazine's compilation "Unconditionally Guaranteed 2 Mar 99" was the perfect follow up to decogulate our brain. This is what happens when non record executives create the playlist, and present you with great content that is beyond hits. Even such eighties-nineties fans like us hardly recognised the acts that were revealed here. Other than XTC, Echo & The Bunnymen, Mansun, Ted Rundgren and Robert Wyatt, the rest of the line up drew a blank and made us lunge for Google/Wikipedia for answers.
Be bold and experiment. Find them all on popular streaming services. You have plenty of time to discover old music now. Trust us when we say, they may not sound old, even to new listeners.
Stay tuned as we write about Orbital's "In Sides" tomorrow along with other stuff.
