Lockdown Listen Day 2 (14/07/2021)
These are what we listened to during day two of our Lockdown Listen campaign yesterday.
7. WIRED: New Directions In Dance (Polygram)
8. Esquire Playlist Volume 1 (Esquire/Upfront)
9. Pure Urban Essentials 2 (Sony/Warner)
10. MUZIK: Heroes! Rewind! (Muzik)
11. Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope (Virgin)
WIRED is an essential 2-disc compilation that all electronic music fans should have in their collection and also a fabulous introduction to those who are not yet fans. You could release any number from it today as a brand new track and those unfamiliar would be no wiser.
Same goes for the eclectic material that has been included in both Esquire and also MUZIK. They can easily pass off as new material.
Pure Urban Essentials is a good addition to all urban fans, with more than enough to please.
The Velvet Rope is the sixth out of eleven studio albums by American singer Janet Jackson, and was co-written and co-produced by Jackson, her then-husband René Elizondo Jr., Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with additional songwriters.
The critically acclaimed Billboard topping album features a fusion of genres that includes pop, R&B, trip hop, folk, jazz, rock and electronic music, and has British violinist Vanessa-Mae, Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell and American rapper Q-Tip appearing on it. The 16-track (with 7 interludes) album is one of Janet's more mature records, especially for its darker themes and edgier lyrics on homosexuality. The album was banned in Singapore when it was released. Not sure whether it still is.
The Velvet Rope is not a casual listen and will require patience to reap its rewards. It will be laying close to our CD player so that we can digest it once again in more depth.
Also not returning to our shelves anytime soon would be the WIRED compilation. How can we when it's filled to the brim with the likes of Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Fluke, Massive Attack, Orbital, Goldie, Underworld, 808 State and the like. It's a definite tonic for our lockdown days.
You should be able to find and listen to all these albums on most streaming services, purchase them digitally or search for physical copies on Ebay, Amazon, Discogs or even Carousel.
