MukaRakat - Undogeze (12/07/2021)
BALI HIP HOP QUINTET MUKARAKAT RETURNS WITH GIMMICK FREE "UNDOGEZE"
Story: Dragon Visuals: Def Jam Southeast Asia
Promising Denpasar, Bali based hip-hop group MukaRakat from East Nusa Tenggara returns, with new their gimmick-free "Undogeze", a single that showcases their grip on their homeland hip-hop scene as well as their immense pride in their cultural background. Despite all the problems and challenges currently happening in their country, the group made up of Lipooz, D’Flow, DirtyRazkal, A’Chi and DJ GeraMar, have managed to put together another authentic single that represents the sounds of eastern Indonesia and which showcases the thick regional dialects and the distinctive sound of instruments from East Nusa Tenggara. Undogeze, a slang word taken from the local language of Larantuka, more or less means ‘move’ or ‘step aside’.
MukaRakat which was founded in 2017 aspires to send the message that no one and nothing can hinder them and their way. Lipooz and company clearly seem to be taking inspiration from early American hip-hop, with Ludacris’ song, “Move B***h” released in 2002, becoming MukaRakat's major influence on this track.
Founded in 2017, the group's name MukaRakat is a portmanteau of Muka, which means Face, and Rakat, a term referring to migrants from East Indonesia, particularly East Nusa Tenggara. It literally means “Face of the East.”
With a string of singles, appearances at music festivals and YouTube music videos gaining views ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions, MukaRakat have broken through to become one of the most promising names in the Indonesian hip-hop scene.
The overall tone of this track with the Miami bass style, is synonymous with 2 Live Crew, a popular hip-hop group from the eighties.
Talking about the behind-the-scene process, MukaRakat explained, “Initially, this track was just a fun project by A'Chi and D'Flow, and the demo was sent to our WhatsApp group. After the other members heard it, we all agreed to join this track and decided to release it as one of MukaRakat's singles.”
Interestingly, this song, which is purely MukaRakat's own work without any collaborations, was actually finished at the end of 2019 when the issue of the coronavirus began to spread in China and had not yet entered Indonesia. It was even performed live when the group performed in Malaysia in 2020. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the song was officially released this year "However, it doesn't matter because this track gives us extra motivation in these difficult times we are all collectively facing today," expressed the group.
What good is MukaRakat without a little surprise? They are actually preparing something for their loyal listeners. They revealed that “UNDOGEZE” is actually a warm-up for their next project that is still being kept a secret. It is expected to be a very special collaboration project that is sure to grab the attention of not only MukaRakat fans in particular and hip-hop fans in general, but also music lovers throughout Indonesia.
But what’s certain for now is that MukaRakat wholeheartedly presents this single that is solid and full of character for loyal fans who enjoy and support MukaRakat's every step and idealism since its inception, thus making MukaRakat a force to be reckoned with as well as the leading hip-hop collective in the country.
Now with the support of Def Jam South East Asia, MukaRakat will soon bring the Face of the East to the whole of Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Asia, and even the world. You can listen to MukaRakat's “UNDOGEZE” on any digital music service of your choice.
