Despite facing the many challenges brought on by the pandemic and the various movement control orders that have been in place over the past year, a group of local businessmen could not stand by and watch their fellow citizens suffering.
Many of these people from the B40 category have now become displaced due to loss of jobs, incomes and savings. Many are on the verge of poverty, have become homeless and unfortunately have to find ways to even put just one meal on the table each day.
Taking the initiative, Dato Sri Dr Nageswaran Ravi, the CEO of PLT Group of Companies and Dato’ Sri Dr Thanabalan Balagopalan, the Managing Director of Rishen Jewellers, together with their associates Barnikumar Harry (CEO of Harry International Talents) & Dr Gunaseelan Suppiah (Pertubuhan Born To Serve), decided to start a B40 Food Bank (Groceries) & Humanity Drive for 300 families in Klang Valley with the intention of providing at least 150 meals per day for a period of 10 days.
“It’s our collective responsibility to do whatever we can within our means to help our fellow man,” explained the group sincerely.
Along with a few key friends, they set their sights on distributing food parcels (groceries) at various locations in Subang Jaya, Desa Mentari, Puchong, Sentul, Bandar Tun Razak, Klang, Sungai Way, Sepang, Ampang and Jalan Ipoh, from 21st to 30th June 2021.
They also visited several homes during the period, including Rumah Anak Yatim Sai Pandian in Setia Alam, Sri Samartha Sadhguru Sridi Sai Centre in Puchong Utama and Pertubuhan Kanak Kanak Selangor, where one month worth of grocery supplies was distributed to the residents of these homes.
They also organised COVID-19 tests for 42 kids at Pertubuhan Kanak Kanak Selangor, with all procedures and tests conducted with proper SOPs while the entire home was sanitized accordingly.
The group also managed to purchase and provide 3 wheelchairs for the physically challenged during their noble endeavour.
Also supporting this project as a collective effort were other prominent personalities that included Dr Rajeswaran Krishnan (Blues Brothers Association), N. Shanmugam (Malaysia India Today), Karunity Saravanam Ilaya Thalamurai (Advisor of Pertubuhan Ilaya Thalai Murai), Datuk Ganesh Kumar (Majlis Belia Sepang), Barthiban Kanmani (Kuil Sri Pathra Kaliamman), Nalini Rajaindran (Ampang) and MKU Kalai Ulagam.
According to Dr Nageswaran and Dr Thanabalan, although it was just a small initial effort, more is being planned.
“We encourage more business people to support the government, by helping all those in need. We also suggest that the government provides tax exemptions or relief for these life-giving charity programs,” echoed the pair.
