Happy Dragon Boat Festival 2021 (13/06/2021)Although we are all exiled to our homes because of the lockdown and cannot get to the water, let us continue to celebrate our cultural diversity. The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu) is celebrated to mark the start of the fifth solar month in the Chinese calendar. According to popular folklore, the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC) of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou dynasty. When the king decided to ally with the powerful state of Qin, Qu Yuan was accused of treason and exiled. When Qin captured Ying, the capital of Chu, 28 years later, Qu Yuan, in despair, committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. It is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save or find him. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of Zongzi (or Bak Chang as known in Malaysia). They are many different version to why we celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival every year but we like the one above best. You may not be able to enjoy a real dragon boat race, for now, do enjoy our brick tribute instead. Happy Dragon Boat Festival 2021!!!
