Estranged "Tujuan" New Single (Released 04/03/2021)
ESTRANGED DEDICATES "TUJUAN" TO CELEBRATE SUCCESS OF COMMUNITY PROJECT AT KAMPUNG BOMBOI!
News Release: Estranged Compiled By: Anastasia Doping
A collaborative effort with TM, the internet hut community project is now powered by unifi.
To celebrate the success of the project, Estranged dedicates their latest single “Tujuan” which is a track from their upcoming album under the Roads To Our Heritage (RTOH) project funded by KKMM’s DKD grant, to their fans.
Local rock band, Estranged have successfully completed their internet hut community project at Kampung Bomboi, Keningau, Sabah for two (2) Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Keningau students Rechellyna Rinus, 17, and Ryveraa Rinus, 15, as well as for the nearby community. The two students, who went viral recently with a video recorded by their uncle, Nick Atie Tangkapas (Nick), of them studying online deep inside a palm oil plantation in a make-shift hut with plastic sacks as roofs which they called “Puru Online”, garnered the band’s attention. This prompted Estranged together with their manager, Mathew Thomas Philip, to organise a fund-raising online concert called ‘Double Trouble’ and managed to collect more than RM 10,000 to build a new hut at the students’ uncle’s land. Fast forward several months later, the internet hut today is now powered by unifi high speed broadband connection, so the students and the surrounding community can enjoy fast internet connectivity for their daily needs.
In line with the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) action plan by Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) to get more Malaysians connected and improve their lives in the IR4.0 era through wider mobile coverage and better broadband experience, three (3) local artists-- bands Estranged, Alena Murang and Stonebay are following the lead of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) by showing the nation on how normal folks can also play a part in creating awareness amongst Malaysians on the paths to elevate Malaysia into a fully digital nation. With the success of the internet hut project, Estranged together with fellow musicians Alena Murang and Awangku Huzriuden (Ojie) of Stonebay as well as Dr Nadia Widyawati from Faculty of Music, UiTM (their collaborators for the Roads To Our Heritage (RTOH) musical project funded by KKMM’s DKD grant) will be visiting Kampung Bomboi and feature it in their upcoming documentary series.
Communications and Multimedia Minister, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, commented on the successful internet hut project said, “Congratulations to the band Estranged for organising a charity fund-raising concert and successfully build the internet hut for the students at Kampung Bomboi, Keningau, Sabah. Together with support from TM, the community at Kampung Bomboi now enjoys broadband connectivity, which is one of the many JENDELA initiatives set by the government to close the gap in access to internet by rapidly upgrading Malaysia’s digital communications infrastructure.” The Minister added that “The government truly encourage efforts of our DKD recipients to contribute to the community and expand their projects reachability to other areas as the band Estranged demonstrated in this project. With DKD’s aim in developing a competitive music industry that can have a positive economic impact, recipients can also be very innovative in their project by having a digital approach.”
Band vocalist Richael Lawrence Gimbang or better known as Rich said, “We are very happy and humbled by the support of the people, KKMM and TM team in Sabah to ensure that Rechellyna and Ryveraa are able to have internet access for their learning. They can also do it safely at the brand new internet hut that we built for them from donations we received by generous individuals. We cannot thank them enough for their contribution. We understand the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone not just in education, businesses but their livelihood as well, therefore we hope that our objective of being closer to the community through our numerous community projects can help to highlight the plight of the people at areas which needed their voices amplified.
So to celebrate on the success of the project, as a gift for the folks in Kampung Bomboi as well as Estranged fans, we dedicate our latest single “Tujuan” to all of them.” said a delighted Rich.
Estranged Manager, Mathew Thomas Philip said “Estranged is a music social enterprise whose mission is to use music for a good cause. The band’s music is very Borneo influenced, so it is fitting that we highlight how we can stand together to assist and also find solutions for communities there that need help either through collaborations or partnership. In Sabah, so far Estranged had successfully assisted five (5) hydro projects, as well as this recent internet hut. We are looking forward to more collaboration opportunities from interested organisations.”
Fellow musician friend from the band Stonebay and project director of Roads To Our Heritage (RTOH), Awangku Huzriuden (Ojie), played a key role in connecting Estranged with TM Sabah in seeking advice on the connectivity solution for the internet hut. Fortunately, Kampung Bomboi is one of the village which had been approved for broadband infrastructure installation earlier this year as part of TM’s commitment towards JENDELA and today the villagers are able to enjoy unifi service. Ojie said “The RTOH crew which consist of Alena Murang, Rich, Hanafi and Din of Estranged, Dr Nadia Widyawati, our PR coordinator Ilyani Alias and me had the first online video conference with Nick and his nieces recently. That was the first time for Nick doing a video conference live from his house in Kampung Bomboi, Keningau which a week ago was not even possible. We also saw Rechellyna and Ryveraa were happily utilising the unifi connectivity and studying at the internet hut, which made a few of us in the group teary eyed. What Estranged did to accomplish this feat was just incredible, from a small curiosity that became a deep focus to assist Nick and his nieces to be connected and at a safe location.
Not only that, we also got to know from Nick that he also had Sabah Deputy Chief Minister YB Datuk Seri Panglima Jeffrey G. Kitingan and the State Community and Wellbeing Assistant Minister, YB Flovia Ng visiting them, as well as generous individuals including Datin Fazar Arif, Faridah Stephens and Noraini Khan who came together to donate laptops, printer and modem for the students. It is just so heart-warming to hear that there were several different groups who are contributing their assistance to these students and it is all for a good cause. We hope this story could inspire others out there to also do the same,” he added.
Estranged Sdn Bhd (the company) also produced a short video of “Kampung Bomboi, Internet Hut” featuring the RTOH crew, directed by Din and Rich of Estranged and co-directed by Ojie of Stonebay and Bryan Kouju Studios, to highlight the journey undertaken by the band in making the Internet hut project a reality.
In conjunction with the success of the Kampung Bomboi internet hut project, Estranged had released a new single entitled “Tujuan” on 26th Feb 2021. Talking about the song, the guitarist of Estranged, Nor Hanafi (Hanafi) said “The song was written with a message to inspire people who are going through tough times or depression. No matter how hard the challenges are in life, we have to go through it, rebuild ourselves and in time we may find our purpose. Ironically this song is an old song. It used to be a single that we thought we were going to use it for our UK event but it turned out to be a scam. We thought we were done with it because of the incident but we reflect on it, revamp, rearrange it and gave purpose to it. There are challenges in making this song due to the pandemic especially to re-arrange and re-record. Not to mention time consuming as well but we managed to pull it through. The song ‘Tujuan’ was released with a music video directed by our guitarist Din.
While Din Hormatov (Din) continued, “This is our first time shooting using green screen. The MV features Francisca Luhong, who is the current Miss Universe Malaysia. The initial idea came before the lyrics were complete. it was supposed to be more like a typical MCO home video MV. But then the ideas started developing rapidly after Rich delivered his vocal and lyrics. We could not have a full band shoot due to MCO so we did a DIY shoot at home, individually. I was assisted by Alena Murang as the co-director and we’re lucky and grateful to have Francisca Luhong to be part of it. We shot it before MCO. The story board kept changing due to the strict SOPs as we cannot be flexible enough to have different options of outdoor and indoor shoots scenes. Band members shot themselves at home and I have to work with less than 10 footages from the band members which would not make justice to the song. I went online to study more about animations and green screen effects and bought a few equipment online to add flavour to the MV. We are also lucky that we have many old footages of random streets art in and around KL that we can use in the video as a different background. So the challenge of merging the band, painting scenes, and street art scenes from our archive, and to top it up with the pandemic is indeed tough. The song itself means to not lose hope and to keep up a high spirit at times like these.”
