The Making of Rentak Sejuta's CNY 2021 e-Greeting Card
We have been using Lego bricks to create themed greetings over the last 2 years. For CNY 2021, we expanded on what we did last year by adding more oriental themed sets and also custom builds to create a waterfront temple cum bazaar scenario with a dragon boat race thrown in.
Although most of the brick build was done with original Lego bricks and sets, we did incorporate original design sets from Sembo Block, Panlos Bricks and Qman (all of which are Lego-compatible). We re-used the outstanding Dragon set from Panlos again this year. Frankly, there isn't a better-looking brick Dragon out there in the market today, not even from Lego. Of course, we could not leave out the excellent lion dance set from Lego, which also has no comparison out there. Plus we added some of the storefronts from Sembo to the temple fete set from Lego to create our temple bazaar section.
To make the whole festive scene unique, we decided to create a simple waterfront, which had a dragon-boat race going on. Due to budget constraints and the lack of sponsored sets this year, we had to keep the base simple using fabric instead of Lego base palettes. We also could not incorporate the new Lego Spring Festival 2021 set into the display as we did not have it as yet. Perhaps next year.
Also, Sembo and Panlos did not have any new CNY/oriental themed sets this year to sponsor us due to the pandemic. Even so, the lack of display space also made it difficult for us to squeeze everything in.
If you look at our display carefully, you will notice our publisher Anastasia (in Pig costume) and myself (in Dragon costume) welcoming "niu" (represented by the bull clone character General Ironclad from Lego's Monkie Kid) by the waterfront this year. If you look more carefully, even Marilyn Monroe (for reasons unknown) came to the party. There are also two pau sellers, one new age (Qman) and one traditional (Sembo), side by side in our bazaar. You can also get calligraphy done in our bazaar this year, plus many other interesting vendors to explore, especially the cool pull cart noodle stall from Sembo.
The hardest thing to do this year was getting the stunning dragon to stand up on its own poles without any support (took nearly 2 hours), especially on sliding fabric. Everything else was easy as they have already been previously assembled and just needed to be placed properly to create the atmosphere.
Here are some quick snapshots from the various sections of our display. Hope you like them. We will come up with a bigger Chinatown setting next year.
We also hope that we can come up with a Kampung setting for Raya this year, but unfortunately, there are no sets from any of the brick companies. We will try and do MOCs but its quite hard and rather expensive to get the right bricks for the job in Malaysia.
