DEF JAM SOUTH EAST ASIA FINDS NEW SPARK IN SYA, THE LABEL’S FIRST
FEMALE ARTIST
In December 2018, SYA shared a spoken word poem with a close friend. Little did she know, the origin of her abilities to express her feelings through rhyming prose and her love for verse would land her the opportunity of a lifetime a couple of years later - as the first female artist signed to Def Jam South East Asia. All while still at the young age of 23.
“I’m really grateful and honoured to be working with some of the best producers and artists around. It’s nice to be recognised as one of the rappers, not just as a female, but as a creative too. But as their first female rapper, I feel like I hold a certain responsibility as a woman to at least be an example to both genders that women can hold it down in the industry just as well as men. Hopefully my influence transpires in other scopes as well”, said SYA.
Her passion and purpose for music doesn’t stray far from her original sentiments in her early days of sharing poetry: “I make music because initially it was my form of therapy, to get me through things, to express my vulnerability. Then slowly it became a way for me to help people reach out to their emotions - about finding connection”.
Although her influences are diverse - traversing the spectrum of 90s hip hop and R&B all the way to their early 2000s renditions - SYA states that her predominant inspiration is her mother. “I never really boxed myself in when it comes to what sound I like because I can usually take inspiration from a lot. But what I feel sounds good is influenced mostly by my mom”. When it comes to songwriting, SYA also has a wide pool to pick from. “All of them are a mix of personal experiences, people around me or fantasies that my mind wanders to; all from an honest place haha”, she quips.
Meteoric rises have been a regularity in SYA’s recent years with her achieving success after success while making her own fantasies come true. In January 2019, her freestyle, KIKA, reached viral levels of popularity, grabbing the attention of hip hop icons such as Joe Flizzow and SonaOne. In September 2019, she pushed that fame even further with her Berzerk freestyle. Berzerk was the celestial comet that brought Def Jam South East
Asia into SYA’s orbit - and the rest is history in the making.
