COVID-19 Status Update (4.30 pm, 10/5/2020)
PEDAS SURGES WITH NEW CASES AS JALAN OTHMAN MARKET THRUST INTO FULL LOCKDOWN
Malaysia continues to recover with another 96 COVID-19 cases being discharged today, leaving 1,525 still under treatment in hospitals. 19 are in ICU while 6 are on respirators with these numbers also continuing to decline. Thankfully no fatalities were reported today.
Discoveries mostly among migrant workers put the new cases count at 67 bringing the cumulative COVID-19 cases to 6,656 in total. From the new cases, 43 more were recorded from the Pedas chicken factory cluster as more test results return. Another 5 new cases were also reported from the Pasar Chow Kit cluster. So far a cumulative total of 131 (122 foreigners) cases have been recorded in Pedas, while 48 (38 foreigners) in total were recorded in Chow Kit. One more case was recorded at the EMCO area of Pusat Bandar Utara Kuala Lumpur & Pasar Borong Selayang, resulting in a total of 195 positive cases with 119 of them being foreigners, reported in the area thus far. At the EMCO area of Selayang Baru, no new cases were reported with the cumulative total remaining at 53 with 36 of them being foreigners.
Due to the high number of cases detected at the areas surrounding Pasar Jalan Othman in Petaling Jaya, the locality has now been placed in lockdown under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) as of today until 23rd May 2020. A total of 27 cases including 2 located outside were discovered resulting from the area, of which three zones have now been quarantined. 21 of these cases involve foreigners.
As for the Sri Petaling cluster, 36,906 samples have been taken and tested to date, resulting in 2,345 positive cases in total that spread over 5 generations. Three new cases were reported today from the third generation of this cluster. From the 18,663 students, teachers and staff that have been identified from 367 Madrasah and Tahffiz schools, 10,568 (56.6%) have been sampled and tested, uncovering 425 (4%) positive cases to date.
Of the 31,164 Malaysian travellers that have returned from abroad between 3rd April and 10th May 2020 and were quarantined, 340 cases were discovered positive with the COVID-19 virus. Thus far 19,952 of these quarantined individuals have now been released.
Despite the steady progress made in managing COVID-19 in Malaysia, Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin Bin Haji Mohd Yassin announced a four-week extension to the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) which ends on 9th June 2020.
