BE.WE 2020: Beyond Women Empowerment Finals @ 1st Avenue, Georgetown, Penang (8/3/2020)
WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE TAKE CENTRESTAGE AT BE.WE 2020 FINALS

The inaugural BE.WE 2020: Beyond Women Empowerment Pageant which is focussed on developing, empowering and taking women of all walks of life beyond their comfort zones, saw Qaiyissa Mya Hanna Enteri, a 29-year-old Health Inspector from Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah (PKD) Barat Daya, Penang, emerge victorious, at the pageant's final which was held at the 1st Avenue Mall in Georgetown, Penang, recently.
Taking the runner's up spot was Pauline Lim, a 51-year-old international school teacher from Kuala Lumpur, while the 2nd runner up spot went to 35-year-old JKNPP graphic designer Siti Nur Fadillah Fadzil from Penang. Rounding up the top 5 were 20-year-old dance instructor Flora Foong Bao Hui and 46-year-old English teacher Kiranjit Kaur, in fourth and fifth respectively.
The winners of the pageant were selected by an esteemed panel of judges that included hair guru & Shiseido ambassador Nick Koh, EK Pro Academy founder Elaine Poh, branding & marketing consultant Shimi Rose, Cindy Wang Bridal founder Cindy Wang, image & grooming consultant Eva Khoo, catwalk consultant Vassugi and catwalk consultant Josephine.
The pageant finalists underwent various training programs before the finals. Their instructors included BE.WE & pageantry etiquette coach Sherme Low, Eva Khoo, Vasuggi, Josephine, business consultant Summer Seang, Shimi Rose, Penang House of Trainings founder Ricky Tan and NGO secretary Shamala, as well as trainers from Signature Emage Academy, that included professional hairstylists Nick, Kent, Wendy and Junris.
The one day WE.BE program which also included a women's empowerment forum and various other activities apart from the pageant, was organised and held in conjunction with the International Women's Day and was supported by the Penang state government. The pageant final was attended by YB Chong Eng, who is the Penang State Women & Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness Committee chairman. In her welcome address, Chong Eng reiterated that in line with the state’s mission to achieve a 40:40:20 ratio in its Gender Inclusiveness Policy by 2030, the state hopes to create a workforce where no gender dominates more than 60% in the decision-making process. According to Chong Eng, Penang has already managed to achieve over 30% in its middle management, with the Seberang Prai City Council having 33% of women employees, creating a better gender balance for the state as well. She hopes it will be an example and will inspire other states in reducing their gender gap,
“There is currently a 24% women representation in the Village Community Management Councils (MPKK) as well and they are pushing hard to recruit more capable women, ” she added.
On the BE.WE event, Chong Eng hoped that the program which promotes and cultivates positive values among women will be a catalyst for them to gain greater confidence, build stronger character and envision greater things for themselves beyond their comfort zones.
Speaking further about BE.WE, Chong Eng said the platform aimed to establish a firm foundation to provide the initial push for women to be more affirmative. "I believe BE.WE will benefit the women of all races and religion in the country,” she concluded, before officially launching the pageant.
For her valiant efforts in championing greater equality for women over the years, the 62-year-old Pahang born Chong Eng was recognised and honoured with Game Changer title and crown by the organisers of BE.WE during the exciting women's empowerment event. Chong Eng holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development Studies from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and started her political career in 1999, She has served as a three-term Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukit Mertajam in 1999, 2004 and 2008, and is the current State Assemblyman for Padang Lalang since 2013.

The day-long event saw the program opening with a free morning Zumba session with licensed instructor Zin Aise Tan from Prai, followed by the Women In Pageant Forum. The forum featured Miss Malaysia Kebaya (MMK) Pageant Series & Selangor Fashion Week (SFW) founder Dr Jason Hee Jee Pin, MMK world pageant director & SFW co-founder Nicole Fe Lynne, Harry International Talent & HITS Pageants founder Barni Kumar, Purple Secret Pageant founder Lilian Oo, Glitz Pageant founder Collien Teh and Pro Image Consulting founder Sangeetha Veloo. Also in the program was Dance For A Cause, a campaign to stop violence against women. It was lead by Mrs Universe Malaysia 2016 Runner Up Marina Alaguru. Adding a bit of youthful vigour to the program was a kid's fashion show.

Among them were Zin Aise Tan (Fitness Ambassador), renown ballet dancer, instructor and founder of 2 Five Step Dance Academy Jo Peh (Talent Ambassador), certified mermaid instructor and entrepreneur Celestis Tan (Peace Ambassador), Service Civil International Honorary Secretary Shamala Vis Supramaniam P.J.M. (Cultural Ambassador), Miss Global United Malaysia 2017 & business graduate Tracy Heng (Ambassador), fine arts professional, tutor & model June Chong (BE.WE Brand Ambassador), and Rentak Sejuta's very own publisher & co-owner Anastasia Doping (Media Ambassador).
BE.WE 2020 was conceptualized and organised by Sherme Low and Ricky Tan from the Penang House of Trainings.
