Samsung S9 Plus Review
THE INDISPENSABLE NEW SAMSUNG GALAXY S9 PLUS
Review: Dragon Photos & Videos: Dragon, Anastasia & Samsung Official

We could not have asked for a better and more practical Android smartphone than the stylish, sophisticated and sexy Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus despite the many strong contenders out there, including the triple lensed Huawei P20 Pro.It has become an indispensable asset to our daily work routine here at Rentak Sejuta, while we were reviewing it, and will be a welcome addition to our production and content creation inventory anytime.
Please note that this is not a technical review but a more practical review of our day to day use of the new flagship device from Samsung, in an actual content creation for Rentak Sejuta.

Despite having an expansive 6.2-inch super amoled curved infinity display, its 73.8mm narrow width and 8.5mm slim form factor makes it an easy fit with all smartphone tripod adaptors, and also most of the electronic gimbals out there, making our job all the more easier. The massive screen with the18.5:9 aspect ratio is definitely a incredible plus for us, since we can frame our content wider than ever before. The bright and clear 2,960 x 1,440 resolution (Quad HD+) screen at 529 ppi with the near perfect colour tone and balance makes it a boon to work with especially for video capture, even in low light condition thanks to better noise-defeating features of the device. This incredibly radiant and crispy display fills 90% of the front of the S9 Plus with no bezel and thankfully no notch, to hinder our full view.
Featuring one of the finest wide angle smartphone cameras in the market, the dual lense with dual OIS coupled to a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12 MP AF sensor, makes both photo and video capture a cinch. It’s f/1.5 (maximum) and f/2.4 (tele) apertures definitely renders everything bright and clear. But it tends to get over bright during direct Facebook Live streams with no way of controlling it. A dedicated FB stream app from Samsung with proper video controls would be a much welcome respite to this minor distraction. Regular video capture does not face the same fate though. Despite the slight discrepancies, the S9 Plus is definitely the best FB Live streaming device in the market today. Its primary lens can also capture super-slow-motion video at 960 frames per second if you are into serious videography. The S9 Plus’ Quad HD+ resolution is impressive, but the default Full HD 1080p which we normally prefer is still outstanding. Most of what we captured was suitable enough for broadcasting, making the S9 Plus an excellent choice for smartphone videographers.

Its 8MP front-facing camera will capture decent selfies without overly whitewashing your face while maintaining details, and will allow you to paint your face with AR Emoji props and masks, which is good for a few laughs, but was never ever in contention during our more professional usage of the device.
The tonal balance and colour saturation is excellent on photos, making the S9 Plus a suitable substitute for our DSLRs when required, especially when we needed to instantly switch to a wide mode when we had our teles mounted on our primary cameras, but the S9 could do with a quicker shutter to reduce relative blurring when subjects were moving in low light. But that goes for nearly all new flagship phones in the market, except for the single lensed Nexus 6P which is capable of freezing a shot satisfactorily despite lighting conditions. The S9 Plus faired much better in bright light. Also notable is the live focus feature which allows you to create beautiful bouquet shots of your subjects.
This vibrant art piece on a wall along a back lane near Chinatown that hosts KL's Pasar Karat, was perfectly captured with the S9 Plus, maintaining its colour accuracy and detail.
Another beautiful street art piece by renown Sabahan street artiste Kenji Chai and comrade in arts, Nestwo, along Lorong Panggung near Chinatown, captured with amazing clarity and colour reproduction by the S9 Plus.
During its stint with Rentak Sejuta, the S9 Plus was used predominantly for Facebook Live streams and occasional video capture for performances, interviews and such, and also close up photos and wide angle photos of artistes and celebrities. Much improved is the audio capture features of the device, with hardly any cracking of the audio playback, even from video recordings from loud sessions. Not yet the refined quality of the now defunct Nokia 1020 and 1520s, but more than good enough. Thankfully Samsung is standing by both the 3.5mm headphone jack as this allows us to plug in our Remax or Rhode smartphone directional microphones for better audio capture. Notably the S9 Plus also comes with stereo playback.

Structurally the build quality of the phone with its robust but sleek aluminium housing is much tougher than previous models. The bezel at either end of the display is also marginally thinner. Despite constantly being slipped in and out of pockets filled with various devices, keys, coins and other scratch inducers, the Gorilla Glass 5 screen was totally unaffected. Despite all these, we still recommend a proper casing for the device to protect it even better. The glass maybe scratch proof but it will still break if it hits the ground the wrong way, just like all other devices in the market.

Performance wise the S9 Plus with Exynos 9810CPU and 6GB of RAM simply chewed through all regular apps with ease, and was never once undone. The large 3,500 mAh got us through most of a full working day (at least 3 media events per day with multiple photoshoots, live FB streams. video captures and continuous FB / Instagram updates).
The S9 Plus is both dust and water-resistant making it the perfect companion when we were shooting concerts and events outdoors in extreme conditions. Our piano like Midnight Black review unit was unfortunately a magnet for finger prints but was not issue since we used a slim and readily available third party silicon case to wrap the device and to give it a little more grip. Which is a plus point for Samsung because third party accessories seem to pop up no sooner that its new releases hitting the market.

The new center-aligned rear fingerprint sensor will be a welcome to most, but was not a critical feature for us since the phone was always remained unlocked so everyone in Rentak Sejuta could use it hassle free.
