Miss Grand Kuala Lumpur 2018 finalists led by their state director Jacqueline Liwanag Malabuyoc visited the Mang Tha Community Centre in Jalan Yew in Kuala Lumpur as part of their charity activities, yesterday morning.
Mang Tha focuses on empowering and rebuilding the lives of women refugees of the Chin ethnicity from Myanmar, who are here under the protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Malaysia. It helps prepare women in work and language skills ahead of their placement in other foreign nations. The centre also helps generate supplementary income through the creation of attractive handbags, purses, tote bags, backpacks and accessories based on ethnic and traditional designs, for these women who are not allowed to be employed in the Malaysian work force due to their refugee status. Their well crafted and beautiful handmade products are then sold in selected bazaars under the Mang Tha brand. The centre also hosts a nursery for the women's children.
The Mang Tha Community Centre which was set up in 2006 is managed by a diminutive but confident 21 year old Muang (pronounced Mu-Ah), who herself escaped persecution in Myanmar with her parents when she was only 14. Speaking in fluent English, Muang explained the workings of the centre and its aspirations & hopes for improving the lives of refugee women of Myanmar, to the finalists of MGKL 2018. The centre currently host 10 artisans specializing in making bags and also accessories. During their visit, the MGKL 2018 finalist were introduced to four of the artisans, and given a tour of the premises, and had a chance to see up close how the products in the centre were made, and its end results. The finalist were quite excited to check out the well made handbags, clutches, totes and backpacks, and were quick to model them.

It is estimated that there are more than 20,000 Chin refugees living here in Malaysia, waiting for placements, and the Mang Tha Community Centre is a great boon to helping and preparing these displaced refugees in starting over. The centre runs mostly on donations and earnings derived from sales of its products, and welcomes help from generous Malaysians. Cash donations will be great, but they are happy to receive food and equipment as well. They are currently in need of fire extinguishers, computers, printers and a television set.
More lovely items from Mang Tha.
