Superman Strikes Again
It did not come as a big surprise to find Anny, Mimi & Aliya in the bottom 3. But it was surprising to find Farah in the bottom 5. I guess the Farahnatics must be getting a little complacent and not doing enough. I was also a bit dissapointed that a great singer like Anny was shown the exit but that's what happens if you sail through smoothly under the radar and without mind blowing performances. Iit simply had to happen. Its is important to note that neither Anny, Mimi or Aleya are creating excitement with the audience and fans of OIAM. I have said all this before, if you don't build relationship with the audiences and create fan support, you are going home for sure. It was clearly evident here. I wouldn't be surprise if Aleya is next, as she has not lobbied enough either.
Adding Suki to the mix was just for pure drama, but it had hardly any effect, as I bet every single one in the audience knew she was the one with the highest votes even before they announced it. The audience are more mature these days and are not so easily fooled.
Suki did what Suki does. She has the talent but she does just enough to get by, and is depending too much on her popularity to get her through. That will end if she doesn't buck up and let us see the talent she really has. For me, just "cukup makan" performance this week.
Irregardless of what the judges said and the audience's overwhelming cheers, I thought Zai's singing was pretty flat this week. Her performance has been topsy turvy ever since auditions. Where's the Zai from then?
I can't comment anything on Lokman, cause I can't remember his performance. Hmmm. (I will watch the repeat before I comment on him)
A beautiful calypso inspired rendition by Azfar gave the song a refreshing change and makes me feel that Azfar is one of the front runners in the competition despite the bottom 5 listing. Paul Mos may have thought he was comical but I believe this guy is going far, with or without the title. and of all the singers in the competition, he was definitely the most musical.
I totally disagree with all the judges. Dayang was clumsy at best. She seemed to have started on the wrong key and had zero body to her voice. It sounded way too nasal throughout. But she does sing better live than Beyonce who is totally engineered. She is not the only one ( and doubt she even is) who can bring out the sound of today, Paul. If you haven't heard, Jaclyn Victor's already doing it. Why don't you get a copy of "Inilah Jac" first and listen to it. And what's with all the over zealous arm punching in the air. Its so dated. Frankly, I love Dayang, she is a solid singer and one of Malaysia's best, but this contest is doing her more harm than good.
A reasonably strong & stylish performance by Ameen but what's with the Sonic the Hedgehog hairstyle?
Aliya has a solid, strong voice that can rival any of the local singers today, including Dayang, but she was totally uninspiring in her performance.
I would have thought it was a brilliant song choice for Farah and expected a lot more from her. She is one of the very few who sings English numbers as if it was her natural language, and as such will be indistinguishble from any foreign artist. She has lovely low registers and it showed with her rendition of the song. It can be seen that she has also the reach on the higher notes but she lacks the nuances to make those notes pretty, which makes the stretching pretty flat. The other thing which really irritates me is the face crunching, the palm across the cheeks and the clenched fist. it just doesn't work and is excruciating to watch. Come on Farah, you have improved so much that I am a fan, but you really got to shine through if you want to win this competition.
Wow!!! Faizal was the bomb. That was the best RE-intepretation of Beatles "With A Little Help from My Friends" that I have ever heard. It was so original, it can only be declared a Faisal Tahir original. If the song was released as a single today, I would rush out and buy it. You would have made the Beatles proud, bro. I wouldn't be surprised if you won OIAM. I am already rooting for you and already thinking of starting a Faizal Tahir fan club. So keep up the good work. Looking forward to next week.
Being cute alone is not gonna help Alif. No doubt he has a an interesting tone to his voice and with the right songs, he will be a force to reckon with. But for now, he is just doing a passable job. But he is building a fan base.
I hope everyone who has been slacking this week buck up or Faizal is going to run away with the title. Day by day he is winning over fans, and not even the Suki Low fan juggernaut will be able to stop him. Paul Moss is absolutely right that Faizal is the only who is treating this competition as a competition and doing everything to win it. And I certainly hope he does.
Overall, Paul Moss has been spot on for most things with a few exceptions, and I am so very glad that Syafinaz has shortened her book report.
More on this week's episode later.
