THE HEAT HAS JUST BEGUN!
News Release: 8TV
Once again the nations’ most eminent dancers from around the country flocked in for auditions for a chance to battle it out for ultimate dance supremacy. That’s right! All in all 90 crews made their way to the SHOWDOWN 2013 Junior and Open Category auditions that took place on Saturday, 11th May 2013 at Hall A, Menara Matrade, Jalan Khidmat Usaha, Off Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur. 29 out of the 63 crews that auditioned in the open category and 12 out of the 27 in the junior category danced their way to the next stage of the competition. It is clear that this year the crews have stepped up their game and brought maturity to the dance floor.
It was a stage filled with the most electrifying moves, spins, stunts and jaw dropping moments. 10 year old Muhammad Danish Zakwan bin Mohamad Faidza from the Stay Cool crew left the judges in awe when he pulled off a perfect head spin, gaining even from the older contestants a dose of respect. When asked about his experience he said “I’ve been following SHOWDOWN since its first episode and have always wanted to take part in the competition. I’ve practiced the head spin technique for almost two years to get it perfect.” He also added that although he is still schooling his family and friends have given him full support to contest in SHOWDOWN 2013.
Apart from that, there were old crews with new faces that came to give it another shot in bagging the Showdown title. One of the most remembered crews; INVERSION, dropped in to the auditions with a new member from SOUL GANG, both of which made it to the Top 12 of SHOWDOWN 2012.
Each category is open to crews of 4 – 8 dancers. The Open category welcomed dancers of all ages, whereas the Junior category was opened to dancers under the age of 18, while the All Star category that is opened to crews by invitation only, will take place on the 15th of June. Crews in each category will compete amongst themselves in each stage, from the auditions, the quarter finals through to the semi-finals and ultimately THE FINAL SHOWDOWN.
Apart from winning bragging rights to the SHOWDOWN 2013 Champions title, the crews of the Open category will battle it out for RM50,000 cash as well as a regional competition package worth RM50,000, while the 1st runner up lands themselves RM20,000 cash. The Junior category see crews fight for RM10,000 cash and RM5000 for the 1st runner up, while the All Star crews go head on to bag RM75,000 cash and an international competition package worth RM125,000 as well as RM30,000 cash for the 1st runner up.
“So the auditions are done and it’s simply been amazing - the outstanding response we’ve received. From a production point of view, we said showdown is back bigger, better, and newer than new – and it is eminent that even the dancers mean it too. There is no doubt that the standard of dance in the country has risen tremendously since the Showdown began in 2010. That's the essence of Showdown right there, ground breaking and for the people. It’s going to be a whole new adventure for the crews as well as the viewers, so get ready!” said Group General Manager of 8TV and Ntv7, Ms. Airin Zainul.
In its mission to build the standard of dance in our country and at the same time show some love and appreciation to the fans of the show for their continuous support, SHOWDOWN brings back its annual SHOWDOWN BACK ATCHA’ session, in which dancers get a chance to learn the trick of the trade from the maestros of dance themselves.
