Are men only attracted by external beauty …
Find out in the action fantasy romance slick “Painted Skin II – The Resurrection” about a fox demon who is yearning to be a human. This movie is the sequel to “Painted Skin (2008)” by Gordon Chan. Similar to the first movie, this story is about love and sacrifice, would you sacrifice your life for the one you love? The main character is played by the same actress, Zhou Xun and also returning are fellow mainland stars, Vicki Zhao Wei and Chen Kun but undertakes completely different roles.
According to the demon lore, it takes hundreds of years to attain human form. Even then, lacking a human heart, a demon cannot experience the true pains and passions of existence. However, there is a legend that if a pure human heart is freely offered to a demon, it can become a mortal and experience true life.
In ancient China, fox demon Xiaowei (Zhou Xun) was imprisoned in an ice abyss for 500 years for breaking the rule of saving the life of a mortal. She was released from the ice by a bird demon, Quer (Mini Yang) who becomes her follower and is convinced by Xiaowei’s philosophy that men are only attracted by external beauty. To survive and maintain her beauty, Xiaowei needs a regular supply of men’s heart and is constantly searching for someone who will willingly give up his heart so that she can transform into a human. During her journey to search for men, she met a barbarian prince and took his heart out but it proved useless. One month later Xiaowei was rescued by a masked warrior on horseback who turned out to be Princess Jing (Vicki Zhao), who is the only unmarried one of the King’s 14 daughters. Xiaowei accompanies the Princess to White City, a border town next to the rival barbaric kingdom of Tianlang to search for the man she loved, General Huo Xin. The Princess has been betrothed to the Prince of Tianlang, who happens to be the same barbarian prince whose heart has been taken out by Xiaowei.
The main story here is the love story between Princess Jing and her handsome bodyguard, General Huo Xin (Chen Kun), whom she secretly loved. Jing was mauled by a giant bear when she was 15 years old and Hou Xin fled in shame at not able to protect her. Jing was heavily scarred on the face from the attack and wears a golden mask. Now 8 years later, she went to the White City to search for Huo Xin but when Jing meets Huo Xin again, he is still covered in shame and rejects her. Xiaowei tries to seduce Huo Xin and win his heart and Jing discovered that she is a demon in disguise. Xiaowei then convinces Jing to swap outer skins with her and see if Jing can win Huo Xin’s heart that way. Thinking that Huo Xin rejected her because of her looks, the princess agrees to swap with Xiaowei but she has to pay the price with her heart for the swap.
Be prepared to be drawn into a world of mystical fantasy of myth and witchcraft with a powerful performance by both Zhou Xun and Vicki Chao. Their relationship is both sisterly and rivals at the same time. There is a comical character in the form of a street quack cum demon-hunter Pang (William Feng) and he falls for the cute and spirited bird demon, Quer. Their relationship is delightful and entertaining to watch, provided a lighter side to all the serious stuff. Plenty of visual effects and flashy action sequences.
“Painted Skin II – The Resurrection” is distributed by RAM Entertainment and is now showing in cinemas nationwide.
