Beat!'s 4.6th Birthday Pow Wow ft Andy Rourke (The Smiths) DJ Set @ Home Club, 20, Upper Circular Road, Singapore (22/10/10)
Ahhh yes, 4.6 years ago, BEAT! began. It’s a dancefloor hail storm that takes no prisoners. This year, no less than indie legend Andy Rourke (ex-bassist of The Smiths) comes celebrate this hellfire birthday bash with us in a rock n’ roll pow wow! Lauded The Smiths’ guitarist Marr claims that Rourke’s contribution to The Queen Is Dead LP was “somet…hing no other bass player could match”. Having recorded and played with Sinéad O’Connor, The Pretenders, Badly Drawn Boy and former bandmate Morrissey’s songs, Andy Rourke’s DJ sets are some of his own personal favorites from Indie to Rock both new and old, we are talking a musical journey from one of the pioneers of the UK Indie/Rock Scene.
And you think that’s all? We gots more! How’s about Dr. Martens boots, a specially designed :phunk studio skateboard named “Street Hassle”, free band t-shirt giveaways from Getup Merch and new releases from Brandon Flowers, Arcade Fire and Crystal Castles to give away! See you on the 22nd of October. Fo sho’!

About Andy Rourke
Andy Rourke is a Legend in his own right, when Marr and Morrissey formed the Smiths, Rourke joined the band after their second gig, and remained with the band almost throughout its existence. Marr claims that Rourke’s contribution to The Queen Is Dead LP was “something no other bass player could match”.
Immediately after the break-up of the band, Rourke and Smiths drummer Mike Joyce played with Sinéad O’Connor – Rourke (but not Joyce) appears on the album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. The duo also provided the rhythm section for two singles by former Smiths singer Morrissey, and Rourke composed the music for Morrissey’s songs “Yes, I Am Blind” and “Girl Least Likely To”.
Rourke has also played and recorded with The Pretenders (appearing on some of the tracks on 1994′s Last of the Independents); Killing Joke, Badly Drawn Boy, Aziz Ibrahim (formerly of the Stone Roses), and ex-Oasis guitarist Bonehead (as “Moondog One”).
Rourke recently relocated to New York and is currently recording with DJ /Producer Junior Sanchez and has landed himself a DJ residency on New Yorks hip East Village radio station, broadcasting new and classic indie /electro anthems on Tuesday Afternoon featuring live collabrations with friends and upcoming acts from New Yorks Indie/Electro Scene . As you might expect Andy Rourke’s DJ sets are some of his own personal favorites from Indie to electro both new and old , we are talking a musical journey from one of the pioneers of the UK Indie/Rock Scene
About BEAT!
Having kicked off on a Friday night in February of 2006, BEAT! residents Ginette Chittick and Joe Ng have been bringing indie-rock on at Home Club every Friday since, making it the longest-running indie/rock night in Singapore. BEAT! is where the indie heads come home to music like anything from The Smiths, The Killers and Interpol to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Strongly rooted in its vision of bringing independent music to Singapore, BEAT! also plays host to a multitude of band gigs during the earlier part of the night. Staunch in its belief, BEAT! has provided a platform for all artistes – from budding young talents to established local names like Plain Sunset, I Am David Sparkle, Typewriter and the Pinholes to players from the world stage like Handsome Furs and Emmy the Great.
Conscientiously laying the fever on the BEAT! dancefloor, the night has seen guest DJs like Kele of Bloc Party, Mani of Stone Roses, Lovefoxxx of CSS and Simon Rix of Kaiser Chiefs grace its decks. The duo has also brought the BEAT! banner beyond Home Club, having opened for BluePrint fashion event, played at Redbull X-Riders event to a 18,000-strong crowd, Baybeats ’09, the Muse after-party, Singfest after-party, twice at Kualar Lumpur’s Bar Sonic alongside Twilight Action Girl, the Global Gathering ‘08 in Malacca and Topshop private parties.
To quote the duo: “BEAT! has been running with scissors, steadily building a reputation for raucous reckless fun for 4 blazing years and nothing’s going to stop them!”
