Meddle & Magus @ Palate Palette (28/8/10)
This Saturday, 28th August 2010, sees Palate Palette in Kuala Lumpur hosting a rare night of avant rock action with Meddle and Magus setting up their stall at the loft of the intimate venue. Both bands, which have gained a cult following this past year, are spin-off projects from acclaimed regional experimental/indie outfit The Observatory, with Singaporean and Malaysian members.
What's on the cards? Meddle is an improvisational rock quartet featuring members of The Observatory (Dharma, Vivian Wang, Leslie Low) and Mark Dolmont on drums. The band is a psych-prog powerhouse who will take you to the outer reaches and back with their improvisations. The mission: to release the shapes that are latent in that unique moment of time, so no two performances are ever the same from Meddle.
Elsewhere, you have Magus - a duo comprising of Mark Dolmont (Meddle) on drums and Leslie Low (The Observatory, Meddle, Snake Blood Union) on guitar. Like Meddle, Magus has its roots in improvisation, hypnotic repetition, horror, and melancholia down by the river in a van by the woods.
With both bands, playing instrumental sets, indebted to music from the Southern Lord/Rune Grammofon roster, early 1970s Miles Davis and the psychedelic Soft Machine/Pink Floyd songbook, you are assured of a night out with a dark difference.
Guest deejay sets from Ribut 10:59 and Chaseylain are also part of the evening's cosmic/deep funk rumblings.
Meddle and Magus play Palate Palette, in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday at 10pm.
Entry by donation: RM10.
