THE IPOD NANO KILLER???
Product Review & Photos: Dragon
I spent a good deal of time at the PC Fair that was held over the weekend, and discovered some excellent bargains. But the most interesting thing i discovered and eventually purchased was this "iPod Nano Killer" of a gadget.
It looked almost identical to an iPod Nano and came in all the same colour schemes of a Nano, but it went more than one up on a Nano. The one i purchased was branded as a DIGIsound MP4 Player, but there were heaps of others of the same item carrying different brand names. Obviously this was an OEM China made product that any Chong, Muthu or Ahmad could easily brand off as his own. One vendor even had the gaul to say that it was Korean. Ha! Ha! But it didn't really matter where it was made, it was what it offered that made it an "iPod Nano Killer" in my books.
The DIGISound not only played MP3/WAV/WMA files but also played Videos on 65K colour screen as well, and came included with a built in FM Radio & Voice/FM Recorder among other things. It also doubled up as an eBook reader (.txt files) and flash storage media, and included games as well. The best thing about it of course was its price - RM 128.00 (1GB) and RM 165.00 (2GB). Plug the supplied USB cable to your PC and it will be recognised as another drive. The USB cable also charges the player directly from the PC. But it can also be charged from a wall socket.
A 2GB iPod Nano costs RM 969.00 and does a lot less. It doesnt play videos or have an FM Radio, and worst of all you cant download files directly. You need Apples iTunes software to load stuff into it.
Sound quality on the DIGISound is decent enough, but I would recommend investing on better earpieces, I recommend some tube phones from Creative around RM 49.00.
In comparison, the sound on a Nano is not much to shout about either. Most Creative or even iRiver MP3 players are miles ahead in terms of sound quality against the iPod Nano.
So both these players aren't very far off in terms of sound anyways. But the DIGISound runs rings around the Nano in terms of features, and on value for money. Can't imagine spending that much for a Nano even if it also comes with a 4GB & 8GB model.
To date, non volatile flash memory run around RM 40 per GB. So I cant really imagine why an iPod is so expensive. Buying the brand i suppose.

Here's the comparison chart:
They both come with one year warranty. Which would you buy?
