Simon Cowell has worked in the music industry for 27 years. He started in the post room at EMI Music Publishing and 3 years later started his own label Fanfare Records, whose biggest success was eighties pop sensation Sinitta who had over 10 top 20 hits.
In 1989 Simon joined BMG as an A&R consultant, a relationship that has now lasted 16 years. During his time at BMG, Simon has sold over 150million records and has achieved over 50 no.1 singles across the UK and America. His artists have included The Power Rangers, The Worldwide Wrestling Federation, The Teletubbies, Robson and Jerome (the first artist to have had their first 3 singles debut at no.1), Five and Westlife who ironically took over Robson and Jerome’s record when their first 7 singles all went to no.1. His most recent artist is Il Divo whose debut album has sold over 5 million copies around the world. The album has entered into the top 5 in 23 countries.
In 2001 Simon helped in the development of Pop Idol where he also appeared as one of the judges. He has gone on to judge the American version as well. It was his act, Steve Brookstein, who went on to win the first series of X Factor.
