Korean Film Festival 2023 @ Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur (23 - 26/11/2023)
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia will host the 2023 Korean Film Festival at GSC Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur from 22nd to 26th November 2023.
This year, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy between Korea and Malaysia, five films, “The Front Line” (2011), “Kai: The Legend of Mirror Lake” (2016), "Bori” (2018), “Granny Poetry Club” (2019), “Tunnel” (2016), representing the core values of Korean public diplomacy - “Peace, Freedom, Solidarity and Prosperity” - have been carefully selected.
In the launching ceremony of 2023 Korea Film Festival, the director of “The Lord Musang King,” the first film that co-produced by Korea and Malaysia, will be at presence as a concrete example of close friendship between two countries. This collaboration is significant as it brings together the globally successful Korean film industry with the Malaysian film industry, known for its diverse cultural background and enormous potential.
All film screenings will be free and open to the public. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis and are redeemable from 12.00 pm onwards on 16th November 2023 via GSC e-payment (website and mobile app) or GSC ticketing kiosk at GSC Midvalley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur and receive TWO complimentary tickets.

“The Front Line”, depicting Korea's longing for "peace," has been chosen. It has received several film festival awards, including the Korean Film Critics Association's Best Film Award and the Blue Dragon Film Awards. The movie delves into the historical events of the Korean War, portraying soldiers on the front lines battling fiercely until the war's final moments while also calmly depicting the remaining human figures on the battlefield despite the brutality of the war.

Directed by Mr. Lee Seong-gang, the film, which earned the grand prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, reimagines Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale, “The Snow Queen,” setting it in Central Asia. The enchanting story of Kai, the village protector who endeavors to protect the village from the ice witch Hatan, the endearing river spirit, and the dashing reindeer king, stimulates children's imagination.

Granny Poetry Club (2019)
“Granny Poetry Club”, a documentary about seven grandmothers excited about learning Korean at the age of 80. Overcoming the challenges of late learning, especially during the Japanese colonial era when it was difficult for grandmothers to learn Hangul, these grandmothers come together to study Hangul and write poetry, spreading joy beyond the screen. Their poetry, now loved by many Koreans, has even been adopted as a word processor font for the 2023 Presidential New Year's card.

Outside, this breaking news creates media frenzy and a thoughtless reporter even airs a live phone interview with Jung-soo, using up his mobile phone batteries. An emergency response team is immediately organized to rescue him and as it becomes a national concern, the government promises full support for the rescue. While Jung-soo struggles to survive, a series of ridiculous blunders delays the rescue operation and threatens his chances to make it out alive. Soon, he runs out of food, water, and phone batteries, making him totally incommunicado. Days pass without any progress and people start to lose hope or interest in rescuing him.
