The very first Malaysian edition of the Queen of the World Pageant will be staged in our country's administrative capital Putrajaya this October, and Kuching had the honour of being the host to the very first state-level Queen of the World Pageant finals in Sarawak.
Emerging victorious as the winner of the Queen of the World Pageant Sarawak 2023 during its coronation night which was held at the Grand Ballroom, Imperial Hotel Kuching, last Saturday night, was 41-year-old oil & gas geologist Esther Michael, who hails from Miri. She was sashed by the Guest of Honour Dato Norhyati Mohd Ismail, the chairman of Sarawak Media Group and crowned by pageant national director Amy Chiew. The cool and confident Esther who is of Sebup & Lun Bawang heritage, also won the Mrs Eloquence subsidiary title. Her strong and well-deserved win in the final puts her in good stead to secure the national title and a chance to represent her country at the world finals next year.
"It is both a tremendous honour and responsibility to be crowned Queen of the World Sarawak. I am looking forward to working on my advocacy while promoting the beauty of Sarawak to others," expressed Esther after her win.
"I was initially reluctant to take part, but then I realised that this could be a fantastic platform to widen my reach to more people across Malaysia, especially in Sarawak to advocate for a cause that I am passionate about, which is to increase awareness in the importance of education, while still holding on tight to our own individual culture and identity," she added.
Securing the runner-up title was Nastassia Affendi, a 33-year-old account executive of Malay descent from Kuching, while the 2nd runner-up title went to Dayangku Norhasiba Awang Tambi, a 39-year-old businesswoman, of Malay descent. Nastassia also won the Mrs Body Beautiful subsidiary title while Norhasiba walked away with the Mrs Popular subsidiary title.
The other top 6 qualifiers include Angela Wong Sian Yee, a 35-year-old teacher of Chinese descent from Kuching, Linda Michael Ae, a 40-year-old teacher of Bidayuh descent from Serian and Ezanoni Hadjeli, a 42-year-old financial advisor of Malay descent. Angela was also presented with the Mrs Green Beauty subsidiary title, while Linda and Ezanoni received the Mrs Versatile and Mrs Best Smile subsidiary titles, respectively.
The winners were selected by an esteemed panel of local industry judges that included veteran fashion designer Datuk Raymond Von Jolly, prominent fashion & costume designer Harizan Khaider and Mrs Asian Global 2023 Kimi Tomas.
The pageant finals saw all 10 delegates parading in outstanding and eye-catching traditional contemporary outfits sponsored by the talented students of CENTEXS, modest resort wear created by local Sarawakian designers and sponsored by CENTEXS Commercial, and their own evening gowns in the runway competition. Their introduction round had them reflecting strongly and confidently about their advocacy. The equally intelligent and eloquent answers by the top 6 in the Q&A round certainly made it difficult for the judges to select the final winners.
There was also a very well-received segment where all delegates sang Ella's “Standing In The Eyes of the World” to boisterous applause from the audience. In fact, all participating finalists received their fair share of support from the audience, with the ballroom filled with uninterrupted cheers, screaming whistles and even the blaring sounds of horns and vuvuzelas, from their fans and supporters, throughout the night.
The video profiles of the delegates shown throughout the night also showcased the rich & proud heritage and the diverse culture of the multi-ethnic people of Sarawak.
Queen of the World Sarawak 2023 was organised by PRINTEC which is headed by its CEO Sharifah Azizah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, with Nida Hamid as its state pageant director.
The main sponsor for the pageant was the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS). Other pageant sponsors include Nottingheels.com, Zephyr Dance Studio, Classic Studio and Bloomskin. The pageant was supported by Majlis Seni Sarawak.
The make-up for the delegates throughout the pageant final was done by students from the HDM faculty of CENTEXS.
