The Japan Foundation (JF) is proud to announce an exceptional musical collaboration in celebration of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN - Japan Friendship and Cooperation. Over the years, Japan has been a trusted partner to ASEAN Member States, including Malaysia. In 2023, we mark the 50th anniversary with a joint concert symbolising their commitment to regional peace and prosperity.
This commemorative event will showcase the unique blend of traditional Japanese folk music, minyo and Malaysian traditional sounds, featuring the renowned minyo group MIKAGE PROJECT and Malaysia's traditional music sensation, Asmidar. Through these performances and cultural exchange events, it is hoped to strengthen ties and foster enduring relationships of trust between both regions.
Those events will take place on October 24 and 25, 2023, at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam (UiTM Shah Alam) and PJPAC, 1 Utama, respectively. The events are organised in collaboration with ALIVE Co., Ltd., Medulla Network, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam (UiTM Shah Alam) and supported by Japan Airlines and the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.
Folk songs are the musical treasures of everyday people, reflecting their daily lives and cultural traditions. These songs offer a glimpse into the rich tapestry of local colours and lifestyles across regions. While Japan and Malaysia have unique historical backgrounds, resulting in diverse folk song traditions, young artists in each country continue to cherish and perform these songs, preserving their spirit for future generations.
For MIKAGE PROJECT, a group of musicians who compose and arrange modern renditions of traditional Japanese folk songs, this overseas tour in Thailand and Malaysia represents an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the charm, potential, and diversity of folk songs from Japan and the region. Through collaborations with local artists, MIKAGE PROJECT aims to share the beauty of these songs with audiences in Southeast Asia through the concerts. In addition, a special private workshop will also be conducted at UiTM Shah Alam for the university’s music students as part of MIKAGE PROJECT’s initiative to nurture the future of folk music.
Adding to the excitement, the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur proudly introduces Asmidar from Malaysia as an exceptional collaborator with MIKAGE PROJECT. Together, they will bring a fusion of traditional Malaysian sounds and modern Japanese folk music to the stage. Audiences can anticipate a diverse setlist that showcases both artists' unique influences and sounds. This promises to be an evening of lively rhythms and melodies, with opportunities for the audience to dance and sing along.
Join us on October 24 and 25, 2023, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation through the universal language of music. Experience the magic of traditional folk songs brought to life in a contemporary fusion of Japanese and Malaysian musical traditions.
The concert will also premiere on “STAGE BEYOND BORDERS—Selection of Japanese Performances,” JF’s online video project for stage performances so that people worldwide who could not attend in person can experience the day’s excitement. We hope the concert will help boost exchanges between Malaysia and Japan further and contribute to stronger ties between the two countries.

About Asmidar
Born in 1986, Asmidar began her artistic journey at the age of 12 when she was asked to record a traditional rhythm song titled Jasa Pak Tani. Being the first runner up of Bintang RTM, Asmidar debuted in 2001 and paved her way into the local industry as a classical musical entertainer. Graduated in Diploma Performing Arts Majoring in Music, Asmidar started exploring indie music and become a singer-songwriter in a band named The Moustache.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, Asmidar won Bintang Asli in 2006, and she realised that traditional music was the most euphonious sound and beautiful she ever experienced. The journey of her career became even more exciting when she represented Malaysia for the World Championship of Performing Art in Los Angeles and succeeded to win three gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals in several categories. Asmidar once again proved herself when she is named champion in Vokal Bukan Sekadar Rupa with her new song Biar Mimpi Sampai Ke Bintang in 2011. Not only it is featured as the theme song for a television series, the song also made it to Muzik-Muzik semi-final 2012.
Asmidar believes that the uniqueness of Malay traditional sound is not to be forgotten and with passion and love, it should be celebrated until the end of time.
