Penang Exchange 2022 @ George Town, Penang (30/09 - 2/10/2022)
Today, the Malaysian Craft Council (MCC) teams up with University of Science, Malaysia (USM), Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MOTAC), Tourism Malaysia, Japanese Foundation, Penang State Department of Arts & Culture, British Council, Penang Peranakan Mansion, Think City Penang, Penang State government office, and a few agencies under it to organize the Penang Exchange 2022-a unique one of a kind event that champions local artisans while exposing the public to the industry with emphasis on its rich cultural heritage.
Following the major success of Kelantan Exchange 2020 and 2021 - this year, MCC decides to bring the same excitement and beyond to Penang the Pearl of the Orient: a state that is vibrantly rich with colorful harmony of multi-racial and multi-cultural representations of Malaysia as a whole. The event also aims to gather bodies of the same level of thoughts, with the sole intention to educate, nurture and create massive awareness on the uniqueness of our local crafts.
It is also hoped that Penang Exchange 2022 will be an inclusive platform for local artisans to position themselves and connect with the public or right audience that’ll accelerate their own growth in the industry without heavy reliance on middlemen or traders.
The event happening from the 30th of September to the 2nd of October 2022, will take place at three different locations with Think City as the anchor venue for the entire three day showcase to host artisanal vendors, hold talks and workshops, as well as The Street Food Fiesta, followed by Dewan Budaya USM with P. Ramlee Theatrical Concert: Of Life, Love & Inspiration during the night and The Dondang Sayang Soiree Gala Dinner on the final day - graced by royal guests, dignitaries, and the Who’s Who at the Peranakan Mansion.
Through events like this, MCC would like to become the voice and provide accurate representation of Malaysian artisans while eliminating any forms of monopoly or manipulation in
the industry that has resulted in the extinction of some of the invaluable crafts.
The ‘Exchange’ will be an annual event by The Malaysian Craft Council (MCC) with plans to organize similar program in other states of Malaysia highlighting their own local artisans and cultural heritage.
Align with Malaysia’s effort to create sustainability and a vibrant craft industry, MCC welcomes any forms of collaboration from various parties, organizations or bodies to enhance growth while injecting fresh ideas and innovative perspectives.
