Lockdown Listen Day 62 (13/09/2021)
Day 62 of Lockdown Listen on 13th September 2021 saw us going a little more extreme:
110. Satyricon - Satyricon (Roadrunner)
“Satyricon” has been sitting shrink-wrapped and unopened on our shelves since 2013 and was only played for the very first time today.
Although we do enjoy live performances of death metal and black metal, we rarely listen to it in our offices where it's almost impossible to throttle up the volume to recreate the same energy, lest we don’t mind being run out of the building after. We have always enjoyed it loud, raging and furious, especially in a highly charged live atmosphere in the presence of its true fans setting the pace for their favourite bands to keep up.
So, it was kind of a surprise that this eighth full-length studio offering from the Norwegian death metal band of the same name, made up of lead vocalist & multi-instrumentalist Sigurd Wongraven (Satyr) and drummer Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad (Frost) was a rather meek offering in terms of its genre. Not that it was bad or anything. After all, it was the most successful album by the group, having reached number #1 on the official Norwegian music charts. It was probably because it was a lot less intense and hardly as extreme as it should have been, so much so it become quite palatable by most ordinary listeners. It simply lacked the raw energy and furious drive associated with black metal or even death metal bands. It felt like a crossover that struggled to even be a black and roll offering, as in their 3 previous releases.
Although a success at home, the album, however, did not stir much interest from American fans, having only moved 1,600 records stateside.
Did we enjoy it? Yes, in parts, but not as a black or death metal offering. Notable tracks that we liked include “Nocturnal Flare”, “Walker Upon The Wind” and “Nekrohaven. We personally can’t compare this album with the band’s previous works as it was the very first time we listened to them, but for a band labelled as a black metal band, this release is pretty tame, even for our Celine Dion weaned publisher Anastasia.
But we will check out their previous works when we have the time.
