Lockdown Listen Day 48 (30/08/2021)
Day 48 of Lockdown Listen yesterday saw us going a little cheesy with our music:
83. Best Of No.1 Hits 2004 (Avex Trax)
"Best of No.1 Hits 2004" is an international compilation album curated and distributed by Avex Trax, one of Japan's most successful music labels. The label was founded by Max Matsuda and co-founders, Tom Yoda and Ken Suzuki, who had the eye to pick up artistes that were dropped by their original labels, ended their contracts or were not getting satisfaction, and managed to turn them into goldmines. These included stars such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro and Amy Suzuki. Some of the international acts that have been part of their stable include TVXQ, Superjunior, U-Kiss & Black Pink.
The label's Best of No.1 Hits series was a popular compilation series of the early 21st century, targeted clearly at the Asian, especially the Southeast Asian market, and often included re-renditions of cheesy, lightweight but highly popular tracks of the time. The music from the series may not have been for serious music lovers, but found favour among the masses who enjoyed the silly but entertaining numbers. Although many would not care to admit, the music did get them moving along when they heard it. Avex Trax made a tonne of money from these fast moving compilations, which seemed to find loads of suitable acts to fill in the slots.
This two disc 2004 release put together by the label was no different. You simply could not get away from cheezy songs like Chihuahua (DJ Rocco), Cheeky Song (The Gurlz), Hula Hoop (NaN), Ven Ven Ven (Sex Bomb), Short Short Man (Fingers), Fast Food Song (Fast Food Rockers) and I.O.I.O. (B3). But there were also some excellent dance tracks such as Sister Golden Hair (Floorfilla), Satisfaction (Benny Benasi), Dooms Night (Azzido Da Bass) and You Promised Me (In Grid) in the mix. Overall it was an entertaining compilation that met the taste of the period and Avex Trax clearly understood what to deliver to the masses.
We are still enjoying this album, 17 years later. Simplistic as some of the tracks may be, it still makes us smile and remember some of the better moments of our lives, especially during our current lockdown.
All these tracks can be found in most streaming and download platforms.
