Lockdown Listen Day 42 (24/08/2021)
Day 42 of Lockdown Listen on Monday 23rd August 2021 gave us the opportunity to enjoy one of our favourite singer-songwriters:
76. Elvis Costello - Spike (Warner)
As much as we enjoy all the distinctively Costello tracks here, we absolutely despise the garish looking album cover.
The 15-track "Spike" is the English double Grammy winner's 12th studio album which peaked at #5 on the UK album charts upon its release in 1989, and is a mix of rock and baroque pop. It features writing collaborations with Paul McCartney on two tracks - "Pads, Paws and Claws" and the US Top 20 hit single "Veronica". Veronica won the Best Male Video at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Costello also wrote "Baby Plays Around" with his then wife Cait O'Riordan, the bassist of Celtic punk band The Pogues. Interestingly, Costello is currently married to vocalist and pianist Diana Krall.
"Spike" just like any of any of Costello's work may not be for everyone, especially on the first listen. Some tracks may grab you immediately but others will take a while to creep in, but they will. And once they do, you will be hooked for life, and be looking forward to whatever else the genre bending, blending and conquering musical genius can cook up. Every one of his albums is like a musical event and Spike is no different albeit in a less cohesive way. It may not be the best way to start for an absolute beginner. There are of course other earlier albums which may be an easier introduction, starting with the "The Very Best of Elvis Costello", "Armed Forces", "My Aim Is True", "This Year's Model", "Get Happy" and "King of America".
Suprisingly, despite being fans, this is the only Elvis Costello album in our possession, at the moment. We better get cracking and restore our Costello collection soon.
